HeavyLee stormed out of the library, book in hand. She headed straight for Death’s room, taking no notice of kekeb or DoctorSerpentine when they asked what was wrong. She shoved the door open just as Death was about to slice open Manticore’s arm. She slammed the book down onto the table and turned her fierce gaze to Death himself.
“You killed her. You killed your wife.”
Death signed and jammed his scalpel into Manti’s palm, causing him to yelp in pain.
“Seriously, do you people have anything better to do other than gossip about my love life?” He walked over and threw himself onto a nearby armchair. He rubbed his temples. “Yes, I killed her. Alright? Have I sufficiently satisfied your curiosity now?”
Lee clenched her fists and gritted her teeth. “It wasn’t curiosity that brought me here. I’ve discovered the sick game you’re playing, and it disgusts me.”
There was a pause before Death’s response. “Care to elaborate?”
“You know damn well what I’m talking about. You were the one who proposed the Soul Theory years back.”
“Well, isn’t this interesting,” Death muttered.
“You discovered that Souls were the sparks that began life. Once a fresh, unused soul was bound to a body, there is enough willpower within that soul to jump-start a living organism. However, once a soul is removed from the body, which occurs at death, the body becomes nearly impossible to reanimate.”
Death closed his eyes and nodded. “Go on.”
“Souls that have been removed from their host bodies have few uses. Most just wander our planet until their existence fades, a process of spiritual decomposition that takes a few centuries. You can use these souls for only two things. Extending life, which a fairly large number of used souls, and reanimating the dead, which takes a colossal amount of souls.”
“Get where you’re going or drop it, lady.”
Lee’s eyes narrowed to points. “The one person with power over death, that’s you, is the only person with the ability to channel the souls of the dead. Death’s job is to reap the souls of the dearly departed so that we don’t have the ghosts of our ancestors haunting us, and in return, Death uses these souls to extend his own life by a few millennia.”
Lee took a step forward. “You have a second target for your souls, don’t you?”
Death jumped out of his seats and clapped his hands together. “Yes! I do! You’ve really hit the nail on the head with this one.” He walked over to one of his closets and threw it open.
“I’d like to introduce you to my wife, Lee. Her name…is Arilla.”
Suspended in mid-air was the perfectly-preserved body of Sir Shadus’s long-dead wife. Death stepped inside and ran a hand over her pale cheek.
“I made a mistake when I killed her, I see that now. I was so…torn when she refused to join me here, when I became Death. I became a raging madman, and killed her on the spot.”
Death spun around and shut the closet door. “I’m so close now.”
Lee took a step backwards. “How many other time have you played this game with the lives of the Kraan? How many souls does it take to both keep you alive and begin reanimating Arilla?”
Death took a few steps towards Lee. “Far too many. I’ve played this game a few thousand times now. Selfish? Absolutely. Do I care? Not at all.”
Neither had anything more to say. Lee turned and left.


Xplayfan watched as the seconds of his life ticked away. He had been leading in votes for about an hour now, and it didn’t look as though anything was going to change anytime soon.
He sat and twiddled his thumbs as he waited for Death.
Seconds became hours. Minutes may very well have been weeks. Hours were damn near lifetimes. He felt as though the entire ordeal was a nightmare, but he knew that there was no hope of waking.
The room was illuminated by purples and reds as the sun descended towards the horizon. The sound of the door opening caused him to jump. He was suddenly aware that no one else was in the room with him. Only Death.
Death walked up to the table and held up a shotgun.
“Let’s go.”
He realized something in the second it took for Death to utter that line, something he must have known unconsciously, or on some instinctive level. His mind had simply been too numb during the past few hours for him to realize it.
He did not want to die.
He slowly stood up. Death pointed the gun at his face.
Xplay looked Death in the eye. “Don’t you usually torture your victims first?” What the heck was he saying? It didn’t make any sense!
But, he supposed, anything to stay alive, right?
Death, however, just shook his head. “I’m not in the mood tonight.” Death pulled the trigger and obliterated Xplay’s head.
Death plopped down on one of the wooden chairs. He coughed. Blood spurted out of his mouth. He was sick again.
All his torture with these people was only a temporary solution. He had to face facts. He was really about to die. The game might have been enough to keep him going this long, but the strain of trying to harvest enough souls for two people was too much of a drain.
Some droplet of hope kept him from aiming the gun at his own head. He was close. After that, this wouldn’t be so hard. He would get better.
He stood up and walked back to his room, leaving the mess, Xplay’s brains, for someone else to clean up.

Xplayfan has been voted for Death.
