Happy Layout Fun Times
I think the psuedo english title above pretty much says it all. We have spent weeks if not months thinking about how to take everything we loved about the mashed up, link filled, layout breaking, new user headache causing design that we loved so much and turn it into something simple yet effective.
Not just simple but something clean, easy to understand, easy to navigate and yes this new design at some point will even be variable width for all you wide screen resolution lovers. Our old layout was approximately 1 1/2 years old and we know we have outgrown it. We outgrew it over a year ago. While the new design will look sterile at first glance, realize that it will have more added to it and that after a couple hours you will come to appreciate how easy it is on the eyes.
There are MANY tweaks and additions we will be making over the next week. I wouldn’t take a risk to put something up on my baby (FFR) that I didn’t fully believe in. I know where this design is going and I understand the other interesting additions that will also be showing up shortly.
By all means, leave us suggestions. We have built this community by listening to the community. I never miss a news post comment and still spend hours a day going through the forum.
P.S. Never EVER buy “Egg, Cheese & Biscuit” Combos (the snack cracker things). After eating these, I wanted to kill myself.

Here’s my piece (kind of cross posted):
It’s hot. Really hot.
IMO, it looks more grown up, if you know what I mean. Very sleek.
The only thing that I don’t like is the color of the recent forum posts. They should be blue to match the other links. Or maybe not, since there are other grey links. I dunno…
I also think that ‘latest profile’ should be last in the column of ‘recent stuff’.
Oh, also, that blank space where the ads are for non-subs, is that going to be filled?

I think it’s a major improvement. Not that the old layout was bad or anything, I just like this one a lot more. The only thing that bothers me is the “Your Profile” in the top-right corner. It looks like it can be reduced in size or something could be added in it. It just looks too wide for the ammount of information in the box. Also, the “Recently played songs” and “Latest forum posts” are too out of the way. You have to scroll all the way to the bottom to get to them. Maybe have a little menu that holds them altogether and just have tabs on it? Other than that, I have no objections. Very sexy in my opinion :-Þ

We lost the menu at the top of the screen. This was made up for on the home page with the side panel but while viewing profiles it takes a few clicks to get to the statistics, forums, radio, widgets, etc. Something should be done about that.
But congratulations on your new layout. I know y’all worked hard!

It seems like you guys eliminated backgrounds from the profiles? I myself lost mine, and I noticed that a few others in profile chat had mentioned it too.
I can’t get the right side of my profile to have a transparent background, and before my profile used to go from white to gray as you scrolled down. Now it’s white on one side, and gray on the other.
Aside from that, everything is peachy.

I like the idea, but hated how there was no tabs up at the top to go to certain places, I had to go back to the homepage and then click whatever I wanted. It would have been just easier to put the tabs at the top again?

Interesting to see a new layout. Though.. I do believe it will take a while to get used to. I have only been using FFR since last summer.. So I guess it won’t be as hard as the people who have been using it for the past year and a half. At first glance (just by looking at the home page) it looks fairly cool… Just different. Will check out everything else later.

Well, I just looked around the rest of the site. Only the home page is changed? The rest is the same as before. Definitely not a problem to me.. Because I like the old layout. But will the rest of it be changed to a similar layout like that front. (In my opinion the front page is very bland). Though I do like the more sophisticated look.

As time goes on you will see more, more blue, more adaptation of the new look to the rest of the site. Eventually all the pages will stop looking like borrowed pieces and start looking like one solid design.

While I’m not a fan of the layout in a purely aesthetic sense, it is easy on the eyes and I guess if you guys have faith in it, and believe it’ll grow on us, I’ll keep my mouth shut until some more of the potential is realized. I’m crossing my fingers… but if it’s coming from the makers of “I can’t believe it’s not DDR ™” then I’m not TOO worried.

Looks great. Definitely more organized. I noticed a problem, though. The link directly to the FFR simfile database is great, but the “play” link right under it takes you to SIU. Shouldn’t that link to Resonance or the sim db?

oh God no, pure blinding white light is not easy on the eyes. at all. neither is the light gray on the side bars. I also don’t like how the recent posts is so far down on the page, I rarely suggest anything but maybe, if possible, try putting the latest profiles list in an updating scrolling/scanning form (like stocks or some news broad casts) and it’d be great having more links to stats and stuff(like there used to be) on the sides again or above the newest post, and you guys have a lot of room on the sides bellow the stuff you already have up, you should put it to good use

I think that it’s easier to use the site, however I liked the colors and the menu bar. It may be hard at first, but it’s going to take some time getting used to.
Also, the subscription users aren’t in bold like we used to be. Or maybe I’m just blind. Also, your names aren’t in red. It was a lot easier with the red names, I could pay attention to your guys’s responces.
Overall, I’m sure I will love it. Good going guys.

also, what ever happened to the box in profiles that showed your last ten+ posts, I never heard anything about it being removed, or if it got placed somewhere else. Wow! The site looks awesome! But the FFR game page is ever more filled with junk than it ever was. I can’t imagine what this would do to slower computers. Maybe we can take out some of the stuff and just have the game centered on the middle of the screen and that’s it. heh.

It’s just solid proof that system admins don’t know the phrase “Don’t fix what isn’t broke” and every freakin’ site I’ve gone to they’ve changed the layout or the site itself because it’s too “OLD” or something stupid.
Also the phrase “Before you change the world, make sure everyone else doesn’t already like it the way it is” comes to mind. Did anyone even poll us first? Forgive me if the answer is “yes”
Why does everyone think the site layout has to be changed? Why does everyone think there HAS to be a layout change? What was wrong with the old one? You aren’t required to change things, and there was no need to do this!
This MUST be a W.I.P because if you think navigation is easier now, you’re dead wrong.
Ironically enough, another website I frequent look like a jumbled piece of crap, but that’s because my temp files went sour and deleting them fixed the problem. Sadly that didn’t work here.
The front page looks like a(nother) message forum, not a gaming website.
I’m utterly disappointed that you had to conform to the mindset of every other site admin and change this website to where it’s virtually unrecognizable. I sincerely hope you switch it back, or code an option to let us switch between the 2.
I’ll still play FFR, always, but it’s not going to be the same anymore. Maybe I’m over-reacting, or being judgmental, but I’m tired of the same old rap. It happens on every damn website I go to. And to some extent, part of the site dies with it. You couldn’t just stick to adding levels, could you? Everytime this stuff happens, a website loses something it never gains back. I’ve been a regular on some websites for over 7 years, so hopefully my words have some weight, and that others will at least see this as a rant with a purpose.
A lot of you see this as just a layout change, but I see it as a lot more than that. I just hope that FFR doesn’t fall like the other websites do.

Parts of that might be true for this layout change, but it has been done before. The one before the one that you used to see daily was terrible and hard to navigate. That update was needed dearly, and if anything, I believe it boosted the traffic on this website.

The previous layout (from yesterday)
-All the nav buttons were at the top, clearly labeled
-The stats all in one box, and the name in the upper right hand corner
-The miscellany and stats all together in the left side-bar
-The profiles neatly stacked
-And a professional, classic look.
Now it’s a jaunty mess, and it looks like a very basic web-forum, not an awesome DDR gaming website.
Profiles are off-center and everything is overlapping.

Well it’s alright and I’m pretty sure that time is the only factor that prevents most people from adjusting to it (really, at least give it a chance) I know there is much more to be done so this is a good start.
However, I do suggest some sort of color to be added onto the formula rather than the full grey scale. Sorta feels a bit too flat/monotoned in my view. Nonetheless, this should be awesome when fully complete.

Well uhh… the stats haven’t really moved much …. That looks rather the same as before.
The buttons just moved to the left panel, but I do agree, they need to be labeled better.
The profiles are being worked on if you cared to read anything.

Yeah, I’m just hoping that time is the only factor. That’s what I’m thinking, but I’ve seen that although it might even out over time, it’s possible, and somewhat probably, that people who feel the same way I do will suffer for it.
First the replay DB wipe (I only had 5 slots!) I lost about 10 videos I wanted to keep badly but are now lost.
Second is the skewed game screen not aligned with the old stat-bar due to an ad banner.

It looks almost too professional. Everything’s too clean. If I were visiting a website of a company, then I would expect this sort of website. It looks clean, professional, and simple. However, last I checked, FFR isn’t a company, it’s a game. This new design doesn’t really go with what FFR is. Maybe if I want to buy a computer chip or two, it would be appropriate, but not if I want to play a rhythm game.

I liked having the whole menu bar up top, I liked having the entire banner a link to FFR homepage, and yes the white spaces around the game and make it more “interesting”, I want my custom backgrounds back (cause I forgot where I got it[time to find a new one]), change out the grey bars with light green to embetter the mood, etc.

Well, things change, imagine if things were still looking like they were back in 2003, everyone would be sick and tired of it, and maybe things wouldn’t progress. Plus, think of all the users that really liked the last layout, well, that layout was a change from something else. If things would have never changed in the first place, the layout everyone is so sad to see leave would have never even come about.
So, just give this one a chance, and it will grow on you like any good layout, almost definitely.

The header image isn’t all that clean and smooth looking. The separate images that make up the header don’t match up with the header background.
I also don’t like how the banner is smaller than the size of the ad. The ad gets a lot more attention than the header does.
I like how you changed the content shown on the sides. It looks neat. I can’t find a stats link on this new layout though, I think one should be added somewhere. Showing less people on the latest profiles is good. The random widget thing is cool.
Oh and the dark gray background is kinda boring. It might be cool if you had some FFR related image like the FFR guy or some FFR arrows, or just plain arrows tiled in the background. I think the background would even look better if it just was some plain blue color.
Right now, in the profile page, the background is being tiled in the individual tables in the profile. I hope that gets changed to be the background of the whole profile underneath the header. I don’t mind the small icons for the links on the side of the page when the text isn’t beside them, hovering the mouse over the icon says what it is, and I like that. That’s about all I can think of for now. I notice the background color isn’t working in the profiles right now, and I only know that because my background image isn’t the background for the whole profile, but I’m assuming that will be fixed. Oh, I also like how the bottom area that used to be beneath the profile got removed.

I just now thought that maybe the reason why the background is tiled in the two tables that split up the pages is so that it wouldn’t make a difference between IE and Firfox when viewing the background. If that’s the case, I hope you can find a way to make it so that in IE the background image doesn’t get split in the middle, because I would really prefer the background to be the background for the whole profile.

Oh, I forgot about the game page. I liked how the game page looked before. Surprisingly, I don’t remember very well how it was before, but I think maybe the color of the paged matched the background color in the game, and that looked good. White just contrasts too much in my opinion. Black might be a good color though if you went with a different one, although it wouldn’t really go with any of the rest of the page. While you’re in the web page changing mood, how about creating a page with a larger game size. I usually play FFR with only the flash file open and zoom in on it so that the game is a much bigger size. I prefer playing that way, but it’s unhandy since I have to find out the exact location of the flash file if I don’t have it bookmarked. If you had a page where you had the size of the game much larger, I would play that instead.
Oh, that just gave me an idea. I could just make a web page on my computer and embed that flash file with the size I want, but I would be the only one who could use it.

Sorry, but there’s more feedback I want to give. The stats in the upper right corner looked better how it was before. I’m not exactly sure what it is that makes it look better. For a while I thought maybe the older stats font size was larger, but when I compared them, the font size looks about the same. So I’m guessing that a lighter colored font looks better on a darker background and the line spacing should be increased a bit.

FFR has an authentication test to see if it’s from the web site or not, so embedding it on my own web page kinda didn’t work, but I somehow got it to work by just making it go back from the right click options, but it couldn’t load any songs because there weren’t any to be found. So that idea failed.

And I know it’s been said before but it would definitely be awesome if there was a toggle music on/off option, not just for the menu but the whole game. Often I’ve been listening to my own music then FFR music would come up – some good, some horrible…

For all the people requesting a mute function, you can always download Flash Mute, the installation is not even 300 KB. You can adjust the volume, mute it outright or even mute your entire browser, and it works with basically any browser, like IE, Firefox, Opera etc, really easy to use too, it’s just a little icon in your system tray.

It will also mute the ads, which is better than having something in-game, because surely the in-game mute wouldn’t affect the ads.

yea i think the grey at the sides should match the top bar, giving the page more color, while still looking professional. also, the loggin at the top needs to be fixed, because after i log in, the page stretches and there is a big block of white.

Another fun little observation.. the last layout’s color complimented the actual game of FFR, but now with all the ads and the white background it seems as though the game was just an afterthought to the rest of the site with all the clutter and such. I was under the impression that the site was centred around the game, and if that’s true, the layout should probably reflect that fact.

I was getting really fucking tired of blue, too. I like the monochrome feel with the light blue links, but it can be blinding when you sit in a dark room, look away, and then look back again. I think the navigation was perfect in the previous layout. The only thing I like about THIS one is that my avatar and stats are lined up nicely with the game window.

Wow! I’ve been using the mirrors for sometime now and i noticed they stopped working so I came to the main page and its all weird now! still its ok!

All of the advertisements on the game page make it look awkward. I mean, I do understand that the site must have advertisements.. But is it possible to switch the positioning of them. The buttons that link you to different pages are near the bottom of the page, which makes you scroll down to click them. (That sounds like I am completely lazy, I know). But it just would make more sense if you could click on it, similar to if it was at the top of the page. Not that it should be moved from the side of the page, but just not at the bottom. I’m really not sure that is even possible for you to do.. But just a suggestion.

yo synth ur layout automatically sets you from studenteducation.net to FFR when you try to play the game so it get kicked off by the schools blocking system, try to get this problem fixed plz ^_^

I somewhat like the old design because it just seemed more “ffr”-ish and it made the website seem like more “guest inviting”. I don’t know… it’s just my opinion.

I like it very much, although, while playing Resonance, it would be nice if there was a bar that could take you to FFR, SpinItUp, etc.

I like this layout better than the old one. I think you should keep it unless you gotta better layout. Good job though. Atleast FFR the game is still the same.

You know, I really can’t stand that lack of colour. Maybe if you could make the site more playful and colourful. Chuck some large different colour arrows in at different angles in the background maybe, and go back to the blue colour scheme.
It IS a game site after all. Not a professional company’s home site. I’m not buying all the white and greyness. Sure, it’s clean, but it’s boring as ever.

Even if what a little subscriber says doesn’t matter I have to say that this lay-out may be sleeker..its is definately not easier to use. The older layout had simplistic buttons but now we have symbolic icons. The extreme lack of color may be easier on the eyes of some players, but not on younger players with more time on thier hands.
