But seriously, I'm interested in entering. I'll see what good song I can dig up. I have some surf music I've been wanting to step, but I am afraid that all I'll wind up with is streams or minijacks.

To sync wavering bpms get a wav editor like goldwave. Choose an interpolation of the bpm you are comfortable with [i.e. every 4 quarter notes or 8 quarter notes]. Select a section that large for the part you want to check. Copy/paste the selection then see how long it is and then use that length to get the bpm. Then select the next set of notes and do the same. Voila, perfect syncing for wavering bpms.

I don't have my music math up to par so what would the formula be?
I have a 4 quarter note clilp of 2.792 seconds, and I think the bpm is about 60 (it will be doubled in order to sync it properly).

60/[2.792/4] = 85.960 bpm

it's more intuitive the other way: beats over seconds times seconds over minutes = beats over minutes.

Frequency and period in physics has ruined my mind apparently, I think the other way.

The problem I'm coming across now is that for it to be very accurate (to where I can't tell any difference on .5 (or less) rates), I need to interpolate at least every quarter note... preferably every eighth. Is this common, should I overlook it... IDK.

If you're stepping something with that much variation you should probably just sync it manually in .3

That's what I initially thought. Darn. Regardless, the other way is really helpful. I'll just let my ear be the judge on this one. Thanks again, it's nice to have questions answered, especially by somebody who isn't pulling the answers out of their ass.

EDIT (I like EDITs today): The Goldwave method pretty much solved my gap. Woot. I think I saw that in a sticky somewhere...

What exactly are we looking for here? Is it original as in no bland quasar/emerald sword 16th streams? Is it required to have actual bpm changes (not just doubling) and/or syncopations?

I've got a file I'm working on, and it has a set bpm and mostly stays to 8ths and 16ths. I personally think, however, that it is very original. For one, it is surf music (yay). Is there some way I could check to make sure that I'm on the right track before I get going too far? (Would a screenshot help?)

Original as in different from the stepmania norm. If you send it to me and I reject it you can just release it online, so no, you don't need to send me screenshots to make sure you're on the right track.

You know what I think would help? If ap posted a short list of "good" songs (along with BMS links) that are the kind of originality and fun and innovation he's looking for, and then another short list of "bad" songs that use techniques he wants people to avoid.
