exactly, the point is to come up with something that either hasnt been done before, or do something way better than anyone else has ever done at least. basically stepping IDM to a ridiculous level of accuracy has not only been done, its been done very well before.

so youd either have to make it unbelievably good, or itll just be another generic IDM file.

man i need to find some time to work on mine. i swear itll be so godly.

Yeah. I've noticed I have this habit of trying to step EVERY DAMN SOUND in the song. Trying my best to do two things:

A) Step the 'right' sounds to make the stepfile flow and remain fun.
B) Find songs where stepping every damn sound works (piano songs mostly).

I'm realizing AP was right when he said half the battle is finding a good song to step.

don't throw more technically accurate notes in there for the sake of difficulty... that's hardly original at all. Also, I assume you're talking about those ratchet noises in milkman... don't step those. Only if they're loud enough should they be stepped.

yea, i only stepped the ones that you can hear easily, which was still a lot. like 75% were 48ths at a tempo of like 165 i think, so its pretty hard, still fun though, and passable.

I know I'm not a celebrity when it comes to file-stepping, so people may ignore this, but if you're looking for "something new" in the realm of IDM, and Aphex Twin at that, try his album Drukqs - specifically track 1 off disc 2, "54 Cymru Beats" (cymru is said CUM-ree)...It's got variety and interesting rhythms.

Also, the Windowlicker EP holds possibilities, but weird ones. Hit me up for AFX needs. I used to have most of his catalogue, but now just have the more listenable stuff, lol.

I'm really new here and to the scene. But has xploding plastix / múm been stepped? múm might be too long but it does have an interesting sound. xploding plastix definitely has to have some possibilities. Also, Wagon Christ is a guy that is affiliated to Square Pusher and Aphex Twin, but his sound is quite a bit different. Hopefully I'm not being a dick and posting in the wrong thread. Sorry if I have. Can't wait for the pack!
