    Re: R^n: Shifting Paradigms

Guys, you have the ability to find your own songs. I'm not just going to sit here and dole out songs for all of you to do. If I could find good songs to step I'd be releasing a few more files than I currently do.

I've probably had 6 people ask me for good songs to step now. C'mon, sit back and wait for a song to hit you where you think "Man, I should step this" then go out and start stepping something.

Just because I announced a pack doesn't mean you need to run in a flurry to get a file in as quickly as possible.

who did that vunderbar? I did a short googling and listened to a version by someone like Akuda or Akuna or something, but it was a remix of a song by some Midget band or something. Anyway, is that part you're showing from the end? I can't hear anything that fast/complex in it except at the end, maybe. The taps within freezes though, I can hear that, that seems like it would go well with the song.

Dorian Concept did the remix. Trust me, they go very well.

The biggest problem I'm having is overcoming sync. Many of the songs I'd like to do aren't computer made- they're classical piano, or some type of jazz (big band swing)... even some ragtime. But I always face a huge obstacle when it comes to syncing them, as with music in this style, the tempo (obviously) has minor inconsistencies.

The easy way out would be to use a midi, but that takes way too much away from the music. I just don't know how to approach syncing it... should I take the time to sync every 1/8th on .3x, or settle for every 1/4th on .5x... or just check the tempo every measure or so, and only make big adjustments on the parts that are intended tempo fluctuations. Syncing FTL... and I thought gap was bad >=(

EDIT: If a song (example: any song by Chopin) has so many 'minor inconsistencies', is it even worth stepping?

Yes it is. These minor inconsistancies make it fun.. unless you have a crap graphics card (like me!) that makes the tempo variations make the steps look like crap.

To sync wavering bpms get a wav editor like goldwave. Choose an interpolation of the bpm you are comfortable with [i.e. every 4 quarter notes or 8 quarter notes]. Select a section that large for the part you want to check. Copy/paste the selection then see how long it is and then use that length to get the bpm. Then select the next set of notes and do the same. Voila, perfect syncing for wavering bpms.

                  Thank you.

EDIT (again): That'd make a nice add to your first post.

That doesn't work for some stuff, though. Unless you enjoy random 64th's.

If it doesn't work then interpolate to a smaller interval.

If it gets too small, wouldn't it simply be more efficient (or at least less time-consuming) to just do it all by ear in 0.3x?

                          but less accurate.

Because it is far too early in development to bother hyping it on other sites.

I tried to sync The Banjo by Gottschalk, which is a piano piece not a banjo piece, and the pianist slowed down at the end of every measure then sped up to make it sound really good. Needless to say my brain melted after a few measures. Some pieces are not worth stepping when the intervals get too small, but a lot of bursurk lurk's files are off by a bit for the whole time, but even if they are decently on you can play piano files which is a good thing.
