Isn't it sort of the point to be making "good ones"...

So I agree, it might be nice to know what we're aiming for. Obviously a nice example is Peaches en Regalia.

I agree with Sol_Solis on this one. Peaches en Regalia is a good example of innovation, but it's not innovation if you do what he did. That's why all of the SM niches dug themselves too deep, and that's the reason this pack is in production. You need to come up with ideas on your own.

          Re: R^n: Shifting Paradigms

The problem is you can only do so much with four arrows. Sure you can do triplets and hands and mines and rolls, though mines and rolls usually aren't fun in kb files, but eventually that gets old too. You need a really good song. That's what you need. If you have a song that isn't inovative, the file won't be either. So find a song that's more than repetitive percussion (heh... Sharpnel), repetitive melodies/harmonies/countermelodies/everything else (heh... Sharpnel again), and find something with substance, with variance, with good potentional for some somewhat hard steps (a kb file equivalent to an 8 foot on DDR can't be very fun), and most of all ISN'T REPETITIVE. Oh, and by the way, you don't have to step every note in a song. Pick one part and go with it. Exige and Zag and y'all pick out five parts, step them all, double/triple/quadruple when they play at the same time, and end up with a big mish mash of jumps and hands that, though correct, aren't fun at all. It isn't like you're duplicating the score. Find a part and stick to it, then when something else interesting comes in switch off. You can even switch back and forth. But doubles/triples/quads shouldn't be used as much in files as they are unless you can pull off really fun jumps streams that go with one part of the music. Also learn how to use freezes more. Most kb files lack these, and they make a lot of really great files.

I know I'm no expert at making files, and no I can't make a sim worth crap. That doesn't mean I'll play crap and that doesn't mean I don't know what makes a good file.

EDIT: not all files need hands, or triplets, or freezes, but they are at your disposal. That said, they shouldn't be whored (as jumps currently are).

              I like braintrust's post.

also here's an idea that I'll never do because I don't have the patience or necessary programs. So you make a file that you play on stealth only. The arrows would show up in the background (as part of the background movie), which you would have to basically figure out a way to copy paste the steps into. THEN you could do all sorts of weird **** like change the scroll speeds of individual arrow columns (something I've always wished was possible) and basically explode everyone's minds, and make all the cmod whores have to suck it. the file would presumably also be worthless to play on regular (aka nonstealth) since the background would interfere so much with the regular arrows.

I also think doubles or solo steps are areas that sm should go into... there's a whole new arena of competition there. Like for files that transition people from four arrows to either 6 or 8 you would put basically everything on the center four arrows (so it would be intuitive for spread players) and just use the outer 2 slash 4 for things like drum hits and other repetitive stuff (much like the scratch in beatmania or something). Eventually, once people got good enough, 8 arrows would just allow so much more flexibility for being able to legitimately step more parts of the music... left hand could be doing the drumline while the right does the melody, etc.

That is what I've always wanted to do with SM.

Good idea, but what about noteskins? Random noteskins in the background no noteskin wouldn't **** them up? They could always make a new noteskin.

Not very many people would do this because that means that they have to practically re-learn how to play stepmania just to play it.

I've always found four arrows to be too little to flow the sounds properly, but I've found that having more than four arrows just confuses the **** out of me.

                    Re: R^n: Shifting Paradigms

while trying to come up with ideas in the car for what to step, i thought exactly that, talisman.

namely that, 4 arrows limit your "melodic" potential so much. id love to make solo or doubles charts, to see if i could use some of the awesome patterns possible, but the problem is no one would play them. probably because it requires the minimal extra effort of changing some keybinds around. i would be very interested to see some of those charts though.

would it be possible to submit a doubles or solo edit to this pack, ap? if so, id hella do this piano song im looking at. on singles i just dont think you could capture it.

edit: its not hard to learn how to play "6 finger" or "8 finger" if youre familiar with spread. i seriously think its just the lack of quality charts available for it, mainly.

I'm not sure what you mean... the arrows in background movie would be just standard note+ or note or whatever. Are you saying you could also **** around with the noteskin there to mess them up? I guess that could work too.

Also, for this to work it would have to be on dark as well, as it would look weird for the arrows to be moving behind the stationary ones. Naturally, you'd then have to insert stationary arrows into the background as well.

That's why there'd be transition files, like I said, where most of the song would be on the center four arrows, so it would be just like playing four fingered spread, but some of the easier percussion stuff or background freeze (hold) stuff would be on the peripheral arrows.

                        Re: R^n: Shifting Paradigms

I too have often wished for solo (or possibly double)... as Duk said, it would be easy to learn... index would have even more fun, and spread would just add the ring fingers. It would certainly give SO much more potential and flexibility in pattern choice. For example, right now I'm stepping a Chopin song... his musical ideas are incredible, and trying to express it all on four arrows is... *sigh*

Granted, I never would've bothered with solo, as most people would look at the file and give the generic 'wtf is this' response. That'd be an interesting thing for some of us to experiment with, just to see. Talisman hit it- we could ease people into it rather than 'BAM PLAY THIS 18 FOOTER ON SOLO'. It would take a lot of effort, but I don't see it as an impossibility.

However, maybe we should take one step at a time.
