let me fix that for you:
S = 1 + 2 + 4 + 8...

S = (2 + 4 + 8...+2^(n+1)) - (1 + 2 + 4 + 8...+2^n)
S = -1 + (2-2) + (4-4) + (8-8)...+2^(n+1)
S = 2^(n+1)-1

It only gets weird if n --> ∞, where there is no "last term" that isn't cancelled out.

Actually, it's a good demonstration of PEMDAS.

Interesting. Here in australia in the early 90's we were taught BOMDAS or BODMAS (essentially the same thing)
