That would still discourage new users.

The idea I proposed before about making it require a postcount of 1 (or wait a certain amount of time) before a person can create a new topic is the method to implement the idea you're grasping at. But replying to threads and simply viewing cannot be limited.

Ok, so we need to get a system going on here.

Allow users to change their emails by filling out some personal information.

Implement an activation link through emails that is more proactive then retroactive.

"Captcha's" are being used to fight against bots, so why not do the same when starting a thread? Not quick replying, but rather when posting a new thread.

Maybe even "captcha" during registration?

Just shooting in the dark...

I like the captcha before starting a thread idea. Because then the bot accounts can be made but can't do anything, so our member amount increases, lol.

The steps to solution of this problem aren't complicated. Any number of choices could alleviate it.

The problem isn't lack of solutions, it's lack of restrictive action. Sure, they can pour work into deleting them after-the-fact, but it seems as though they're not doing everything they can to prevent it in the first place.

Don't blame vBulletin, which apparently HATES using anti-bot methods during registration.

I don't think some of the staff have done anything but try to get image captcha working again.

vBulletin already offers a lot of buildin protections against registrations by bots (automated) like CAPTCHA (Image Verification), Email Verification or Registration Moderation. These will however not always protect you against human-assisted bot registrations (registration process automated, a human provide the CAPTCHA verification).
 
Unfortunatly there is no way to block all human-assisted registrations, adding an extra question to the registration process can however frustrate this type and often they will simply skip your board because it is causing them too much work.

It's that kind of thing that we don't want. Rapidshare went way over the top with that and even legitimate users couldn't figure out what the combination was.
