The idea was to manually remove keys like 7/9/5/3/1 or 7/9/1/2/3 depending on what feels ideal. I just remember subin playing index mostly with 2/4/6/8 and doing really well, but I think he eventually integrated one hand play into it for jumpstream etc. Technically the only player who mostly used index to reach D7 that comes in mind. Jsayin' there's potential.
