People were complaining about the severe lack of dude ponies, so they start showing up later. Winter Wrap Up is nearly a sausage fest compared to some of the other episodes. Lauren Faust is on record as saying that the ponies reproduce the "good old fashioned mammalian way." So far OPPP is the only pony actually shown to have a kid.

Previously, in the earlier incarnations of the show, the ponies used some stupid enchanted mirror that would dupe ponies or some retarded cop out like that.
