I strongly agree, too. I have a large difficulty putting things into words. That doesn't mean that I do not know them, or cannot comprehend them any better than anyone.

I think it's more about being well-rounded, since in College you're asked to take mandatory classes that do not have anything to do with your specific major and/or minor.

Actually I disagree. Vocabulary size can give the illusion of intelligence, but may not actually indicate very strongly a person being intelligent. It depends on the person, I think. According to my results, I'm probably mentally challenged.

Christopher Langan is an example of someone who tries to be incredibly verbose and spiffy in order to make his ideas seem more credible.

He's been mentioned in Critical Thinking and I looked him up. Almost everyone who discusses him thinks that he is a religious nutcase that is abusive of jargon and math, as well as being ignorant of science. Yet by IQ, he is considered "the smartest man in America".

IQ and vocabulary can definitely give the illusion of intelligence, I completely agree with ~kitty~.

Intelligence can't be measured, so therefore there can't be a correlation between vocabulary size and intelligence since you are comparing something that's measurable vs. something that is not. My two cents though.

Well, there's no way of gauging the accuracy of said test.

How did you do on the list of words that I posted, ranging from stuff like Ship to Travesty? That's from an actual, standardized test.


To set the record straight, vocabulary size (if measured correctly) is a very strong predictor of overall IQ. Actually, it's one of the best, next to maybe matrix reasoning and variations of kohns block design (probably the single best measure of intelligence we have right now).

Of course, take this with a grain of salt, depending on whether or not you're defining intelligence as IQ.

He can be verbose in his writings. His general conversational speech/text, not so much.

I've talked with him before. Crazy? Probably. Religious? Not as far as I know, but he does believe in God, albeit a sort of pantheistic variation thereof. Ignorant of science? Hardly. His scientific knowledge is profound, actually. Highly intelligent? Definitely.

'The smartest man in America' is just a label thrown around by the media to get attention. That's what the media does. His IQ is high, though there are others in the same range. From what I can tell, just about everything people 'know' (there isn't much; he generally keeps to himself it seems) about him has largely been misconstrued. e.g. he informed me that most of the footage of the interview that is on youtube was actually slashed and heavily edited by the author. The cuts make him seem a little unusual in a couple of spots; his actual ideas are however very reasonable.


You can make anyone sound like a crazy nutbag by chopping up what they say and excluding their explanations :P
