There's a surprising number of people who are phobic to swarms of any sort, and that's known as effervo phobia (effervo = "swarm"). Combine that with the ubiquitous covering of silky white stuff, and that could be quite disgusting for some people.

That makes sense. I bet all the people that are saying "eww" wouldn't be so disgusted if the images were of single silkworms.

I've had this in my backyard before. Just kill it with spray when they first appear. Gotta do it every year on the same tree. Kill before they are even born.

I'm like this. Especially if it they were spiders. Spiders are my biggest phobia (too lazy to give the exact phobia), so if all these pics were spiders then I'd feel goosebumps. Caterpillars don't bug me at all though. I don't know why that is, are phobias genetic? The thing I don't like about spiders are the fangs and the fact that I assume they're all deadly. I don't like the way they walk either. It's not the look though. I have hermit crabs and they don't frighten me one bit. I should do some reasearch/googling.
