Mathematics assumes a lot of things about real-life problems that most likely are not true.
When it comes to mathematical models, you have the trade off between accuracy and complexity. You assume certain things are true in order to reduce the complexity of the problem. And in many models, there are some things that are either mostly true or aren't so significant in the problem (like you don't consider the gravitational attraction of the cars around you when calculating how long it takes you to drive to town for example). So although most mathematical models are not 100% accurate, they are often accurate enough to at least give us an idea of what is going on.

That's really weird that there are degrees that allow that kind of thing. I would have loved to have a pure computer science degree and just ignore everything non computer science related. Pretty much like a tradeskill school, but for programming.

Most schools want to give you a well rounded education though.

I feel like the only one in my damn city who wants to learn everything instead of specializing. I "specialized" in history and technology but I seriously wanted to take a crack at art, music, sciences, math, etc. 4 years is not enough time for an education so vast. Fuck the system.
