Woah, a STEM major with a degree is getting paid more than someone without a STEM major? That's crazy!

Best question I've gotten at an interview: can you mop? There are some things they don't teach you in school...

I didn't mention anything about wages or caring about how much he was making.

I just wasn't aware that there were college curriculums that let you only take classes from a specific field and no general education.

Why even call it that otherwise? What is the difference between "pure math" and just being a math major?

              Re: haha america

Pure math is a major. You still have to get many other requirements to satisfy that you have graduated. (I think you need at least a certain amount of non-math subjects to graduate)

That all depends on your university though. Though definitely require some non-math in mine.

That doesn't explain what the difference between pure math majors and just math majors are.

In mathematics, there are many different kinds of disciplines:
                  - Actuarial Science
                  - Applied Mathematics
                  - Bioinformatics
                  - Computer Science
                  - Computing and Finance
                  - Computational Math
                  - Finance and Risk Management
                  - Mathematical Finance (different from Computing and Finance)
                  - Statistics
                  - Optimization
                  - Pure Math

Pure math is MUCH MUCH MUCH more abstract than the others. Others have a set way to apply it in real life. While Pure math, hard to see how you would really apply it in real life. Which also surprises me.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. Doesn't really seem like it should be called "pure math". Perhaps something like "theoretical" would be a better word than "pure".

                      Re: haha america

Pure math majors doesn't imply that the student just takes math courses during their college years. Math is categorized into two main categories: applied math and pure math. Applied math is what you think it is: math that is applied to the real world (i.e. mathematical models of real-life situations and such). Pure math on the other hand is the study of mathematics for the sake of mathematics, ignoring the context of real-life application.

I wouldn't go as far to say that computer science is a field of math. I would say they both fall under the sciences in general.
