North Korea is allied with China, so even if they did shoot some missiles at us, I don't think the US would start sending troops there. We are not really in a position to piss off China right now, which is probably the only reason North Korea hasn't already had its ass kicked. However, if one of those nukes hit an American city and did serious damage and/or killed people, I for one would hope the US would tell China to mind its own goddamn business and then get to whooping on North Korea.

North Korea: The Korean Central News Agency published in English on 26 January that, "A consultative meeting of officials in the fields of state security and foreign affairs took place as regards the grave situation prevailing in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).Kim Jong Un, first secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), first chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA), convened the meeting and guided it….


(NightWatch omitted a section that contains a by-now familiar justification for North Korean behavior and a screed against the US and the UN. The news item concludes with the paragraphs below.)


"… It also became clear that there can be no denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula before the world has been denuclearized."


"At the consultative meeting Kim Jong Un expressed the firm resolution to take substantial and high-profile important state measures in view of the prevailing situation as the stand had already been clarified by the National Defense Commission and the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK through their statements that powerful physical countermeasures would be taken to defend the dignity of the nation and the sovereignty of the country.""He advanced specific tasks to the officials concerned."


Comment: The operative words are "to defend the dignity of the nation and the sovereignty of the country." This North Korean leadership justifies its missiles, nuclear and space programs as programs that any sovereign state has the right to build, not as proving the North is the rightful leader of a reunified Korea. The main complaint is the North is being thwarted in its "economic construction" by the US and others.
The language is not the language of military conflict or of reunification by force, but of confrontation between the US and North Korea. The US is picking on North Korea and North Korea means to stand up to the US, but without going to war.
South Korean news services, quoting officials sources, have reported no signs of irregular activity in the North Korean armed forces. It is the middle of the winter training cycle.
When Kim Chong-il was in charge, rants and threats always were calculated to obtain concessions from the US, the UN, China, South Korea, or anyone else interested in donating to the Kim family business.
The diatribes and threats of the past week contain no invitation to donate in return for North Korean restraint. More importantly, the statements seem to ignore the context of the past 60 years. North Korea is not like any other state for many reasons rooted in that history. Kim Chong-il understood that. Kim Jung Un appears determined to escape that legacy to some extent, but his tactics are achieving a degree of isolation that Allied policy has failed to achieve.

In the article, they said the furthest the rocket could go is Hawaii and that it could take 3 years before a missile could hit mainland US

Even then, the missile would never go to New York. It would have to fly over canada or fly over 90% of the US to do that.

North Korea threats are nothing new, if anything, they're just starting to annoy the international sphere. Sanctions are being applied by the UN (approved by China's vote) and I don't think NK is going to have confirmation for carrying out a third nuclear test. Their amassed expertise from isolation in nuclear weaponry is just not up to that point. They've been trying to build proper defensive armament since the cold war, if they seek to declare anything and succeed in it, my jaw will literally detach from my skull. It's not happening, they're just asking for attention.

South Korea: For the record. South Korea launched a satellite into space from its own soil for the first time Wednesday. The rocket blasted off from the Naro space center near the southwestern coastal village of Goheung. Science officials told cheering spectators minutes later that the rocket delivered an observational satellite into orbit. The BBC reported the satellite collects climate data and already is in communications with the ground station.


Comment: South Korea has launched at least ten satellites using foreign launch vehicles and launch pads. Attempts to launch a satellite from South Korea failed in 2009 and 2010.


The South has at least stayed even with the North in space achievements, if not moved ahead. The South Korean program is transparent to outsiders and its satellite is actually in communication.


China-North Korea: South Korean news service Yonhap reported that cross-border traffic between China and North Korea has slowed significantly because of tighter Chinese enforcement of customs checks at the Dandong crossing point..


According to the report, "As the result of stringent checking, 60-70 percent of products are not being cleared for lack of proper documentation."


Comment: Tighter border controls appear to be China's first step to exert economic pressure on the North Korean leaders to persuade them against conducting additional tests or engaging in provocations that threaten regional stability. China threatened last week to begin reducing assistance to the North if the North conducted another nuclear test.


The Chinese escalation ladder is long and painful for North Korea. China is the North's primary, if not only, source of crude oil; its primary trading partner; its major source of all kinds of aid; its major investor and its only ally.


The North Korean leaders are rediscovering an old truth about dealing with China. Accepting Chinese aid and investment means becoming vulnerable to Chinese pressure and influence. That is why Kim Il-sung adopted the chuche (self-reliance) national doctrine.


The Allies, on the other hand, are witnessing that China does have significant leverage on North Korea, a fact that Chinese leaders have denied for decades.
