The events of the world lately have reached a level of absurdity to the point where satire and reality start to blend together into a big indistinguishable mess
It's too often the case now where you can read a crazy news headline and find that it's actually not from the Onion
The opposite has also happened as well--there are several instances where Onion headlines have been taken seriously. Google search it if you wanna prove it to yourself.
