your habit is illegal. organizations trying to legalize it are all run by persons who participate in illegal activities. whether you agree with the law or not you can't expect a LAWMAKER to appreciate you completely ignoring the laws of the country, and there's no reason to expect him to act professionally towards a group of people who actively and vocally break the law on a daily basis.
(sidenote: I really don't care whether weed is legalized or not; it's obviously not a harmful drug but then again "you give an inch they take a mile")

Dude alcohol is legal and I'm sure you're not allowed to drink at school. It would be the same with weed. And there would probably be a minimum age to smoke it.

ITT: people who don't smoke think they know wtf they're talking about.
So because something that at least 14 million americans use is illegal, and been proven less harmful than alcohol considerably, any sense of professionalism should be completely disregarded? How do you figure? |

The thing is no one is above the law. Weed is currently illegal. If you think that it should be legal, then fight for it. I don't care. But potsmokers think they should get some sort of preferential treatment over some other criminal just because they think their habit should be legal. You never see anyone parading around that they're a serial rapist, but you see plenty of people who only contribute to conversations that revolve around legalizing marijuana, or with avatars relating to marijuana, or whatever.
I really don't pay attention to marijuana research as to how harmful it is etc etc. I personally don't care. But marijuana is a controlled substance. Buying/selling/etc said controlled substance is illegal. Yet potsmokers get a free ride just because they think their habit is harmless and it's more socially acceptable than say, counterfeiting money. EDIT and don't go complaining that you can't compare rape and assault to using marijuana, I realize that they're completely different things I'm just using something to compare EDITING AGAIN for semantics

I'm pretty sure attacking and hurting another human being is less socially acceptable than getting high.

Crimes such as breaking and entering, assault, rape, murder-- less than 3% of those are drug related, believe it or not. (source: whitehousedrugpolicy.gov). So it's not like we have to worry about the streets being any less safe than they currently are. Just putting that out there.
I live directly across the street from one of the "big 8" marijuana dealers in my area. I smell marijuana processing about half of the time when I step out my front door. He's lived there for about four years now. People who dress in rags, as well as people who dress like they belong at the Ritz come and go there. I don't see the point of all this legislative pressure, when the marijuana control laws aren't even being enforced.

Not always bro. Pretty sure the official stance of the libertarian party is in favor of legalization. They're not a crazy pothead lobbyist group, they're a legitimate political party. You may have heard of Ron Paul, basically a libertarian (of sorts) running on the Republican ticket. He "opposes the federal War on Drugs, and thinks the states should decide whether to regulate or deregulate drugs such as medical marijuana." Now, that's not to say he is in favor of legalization per se, but he is in favor of letting the states decide, AS IS INDICATED IN THE CONSTITUTION (in other words, federal drug laws of this kind are UNCONSTITUTIONAL). Not everyone in favor of legalization are wackjob potheads. Many of them are simply LOGICAL persons who realize the drug is harmless pharmacologically, that tax revenues would be enormous, and that it would keep minor drug offenders out of trouble with the law (which would save them money on law enforcement, attempted prevention, and also would minimize cases of incarceration for marijuana offenses). Not to mention that if it were legal, the black market would dry up and it would probably be more difficult for minors to obtain (drug dealers don't check IDs...). hi i dont smoke I just recognize that it's a safe thing that a person should have the LIBERTY to take part in IN THE PRIVACY OF THEIR OWN HOME. Who the hell are you to tell me what safe activities I should be allowed to partake in int he privacy of my own home? Quote:
Oh, and the substance itself is no more damaging than playing video games or watching TV. Rape, on the other hand, is a violent sex crime which ACTUALLY has a victim. Who is the victim of the "crime" of marijuana use? And if you extend the definition of "victim" to include one's self in this case, wouldn't the same person be a "victim" of a "crime" of watching television for hours and hours every day? Who are you tell a person they shouldn't be allowed to do something they enjoy just because you believe it makes their life not as good? I think World of Warcraft has a terrible effect on peoples' lives, but should it be illegal? Hell no. People should have this thing called LIBERTY, at least within the confines of their own private residence.

Eh, both sides have a point. As far as legalizing it: it's a catch-22. But beating people with a wet cane? That violates the 8th Amendment word for word.

Physical harm isn't why it should be illegal, or it would already be legal like cigarettes.
