My Method (with pictures!)
Ok so, here's how I do it. There are two ways. One is the old and busted, one is the new hotness. I will be demonstrating the new hotness. The only advantage of the old and busted one is that it is somewhat simpler to understand, although this isn't really that complicated either (although it may look like it in places).
You Will Need:
-Stepmania
-Audacity (or whatever you use to get gaps)
-MixMeister BPM analyzer (not necessary but helps)
-Excel or a variant thereof
-Word or a variant thereof (I'm using wordperfect)
-Notepad
-A good sense of rhythm (this is the only thing that will impact the quality of your sync)
-Thirty minutes (it can be done in much less, and it can certainly take longer. Depends on how fast you work and how long the song is)
The Steps:
1. Listen to the song (duh) while tapping along to it to the appropriate beat. Note any bpm changes and practice changing your tap accordingly in those places. Coming in and out of bpm changes are the most likely places you will make errors (at least for me they are) in your tapping.
2. Create the dwi as usual. Use audacity for the gap, and use mixmeister to get a good sense of what the bpm is around (note that mixmeister will like to give you half the bpm a lot of the time). If it's slow (under 100), double it (this will make your tapping more accurate as a 64th note covers less time... don't worry it will all make sense soon). Enter that bpm as your starting bpm.
3. Open up stepmania, go to the song. Select beginner, and select create with blank (same as you would normally do).
4. In the file, begin creating a long ass 64th jack on the right arrow (doesn't have to be right arrow, but whatever). I normally do this by doing a jack for a beat manually, then copying and pasting using ctrl + p and enter -> copy + enter -> paste at current beat and repeating. So it's like doubling. You start with one beat, then there's two, then four, the so on. It is very important that this jack lasts for the entirety of the song. If it goes on longer, you can just Esc -> Play current beat to the end and enter -> clear the extra.
5. Now SAVE. And then exit. Go to, Easy, and select create from source by copy with beginner selected. Do it. Then repeat for medium and hard. This puts the 64th jack in each difficulty you will be recording in and saves you the time of having to do it over again each time.
6. Now go back to beginner. It's now time to record. Set your selector to 64ths. Hit ctrl p. Hit esc. Hit ctrl r. Watch the screen so that you can see where the first arrow hits, then shut your eyes (watching the screen as you do it WILL mess you up) and tap along to the beat of the song throughout it's entirety. when you're done, you should end up with an ugly mess like this:
7. SAVE. Now repeat step 6 for each of the other three difficulties.
8. Now comes the fun part. Minimize (or exit) stepmania, and open up the .dwi for your song. It should have a whole bunch of matrix-y stuff in it. Highlight, for beginner, all of this stuff, except for the opening bracket and the closing bracket (saves a tiny bit of time in the next step). Now you see why the 64th jack was necessary... it ensures that every measure in the .dwi is formatted the same way. If you had just recorded, you'd run the risk of having measures where you didn't hit a 64th, meaning it would be recorded differently in the .dwi, meaning everything later would be thrown off.
9. Here's where word comes in. Open up word, and paste in the stuff from the beginner section of the .dwi (remember, without the first or last bracket). Now highlight from any one closed bracket to the next open bracket (as shown) and hit ctrl f. It should say }[HRt]{, and ask you if you want to replace it with nothing. You do. Hit replace all (you will have to do this twice probably to get all of them since it goes from your cursor to the end of the doc, not from beginning to end). You've now deleted all of the stupid bracket stuff, and most importantly the [Return] in between. IMPORTANT NOTE: typing in [HRt] doesn't work; you actually have to highlight a return and copypaste it in. at least for me.
10. Now this is the cool stuff. Now replace all the 6's with 0[HRt] (zero enter) and all the B's with 1[HRt] (one enter). This effectively creates a single digit column of ones and zeros that excel can handle. The zeros are all those 64th note jacks. The ones are all the left-right doubles that occur when you tap along on the right arrow key during recording (since that 64th has to correspond to one of the big jack). So you've now essentially assigned a boolean value to the notes that you hit and the notes that you didn't.
11. Now hit ctrl a to select all and ctrl c to copy and open up excel. Click the first cell in column B and hit ctrl v to paste. It should just fit in there nice and dandy. And it will probably be in the neighborhood of 9000-10000 cells. This is normal. (note that the next image is pre-pasting):
12. Ok so as you can see my spreadsheet has all kinds of crap in it. The first thing you want to do is set up column A as a counting column, STARTING WITH ZERO. So put zero into the first box, then set the cell below it as "=A1+1" and then just drag that formula all the way down the column to at least where the stuff you've pasted ends. To drag, in case you didn't know, click and hold the bottom right hand corner.
13. Now obviously my spreadsheet up there has all kinds of stuff in it. We'll get to that later (I obviously just use the same template each time as opposed to recreating it for each song). Next you want to repeat steps 8-11, pasting easy, medium, and hard into columns C,D, and E. When you're done you should have something like this (this is prepasting of E):
14. Ok so here's where the ones and zeros come in. Columns F, G, H, and I are all going to calculate at what second each of your taps hit, for beginner, easy, medium, and hard recordings, respectively. So column F will refer to column B, column G to C and so on. This is the formula you want to enter (for cell F1 as an example): "=(A1/16)*(60/BPM)*B1+GAP*B1" (insert whatever bpm and gap you used, and remember to change this between files). Copy this down each column. You can even copy it across columns, but remember to go in and change the first variable to refer to column A (if that doesn't make sense, then you're better off just typing it once per each column).
Now, how does this formula work, you might ask? In case you haven't figured out already, it basically just goes through every 64th note of the file and calculates the second at which it hits. Literally the formula in units is NumberOf64ths X 1 Beat/16 64ths X 1 minute/BPM beats X 60 seconds/minute + GAP in seconds. So all the zeros and ones do is act as true or false values. If you hit a note there, you'll get a second value. If you didn't, you'll get zero. If you do this successfully, you should end up with something like this:
Does it look familiar? It should. It's basically just like what you see in sm if you had recorded all four times in one difficulty on different arrows. Sort of like the steps editor except in matrix mode.
15. Ok, so now we know when each tap hit, but what about all those zeros? How will we ever average them out with all those zeros in the way? Basically, you just highlight all the data in a column (WARNING: if you just select a whole column, you may end up seriously boning your computer if it accidentally grabs through cell 65556 or whatever it is. This happened to me once and now I just highlight manually). Copy this into a blank notepad file, then copy that into word (if you go straight to word it will come out with this weird formatting that messes things up. Now hit ctrl f, and replace all 0[Hrt] with <Nothing>, and that deletes them all! note that it can't delete any of the recorded taps, because excel will never report a decimal that ends in zero unless you ask it to specifically. Now you select all and copy and then paste it in to column J. Repeat this for each difficult for columns J-M.
16. Now the easy stuff. Set column N (eg given is for cell N1) to "=average(J1:M1)" and copy that down til at least where columns J - M end. (Columns J - M should all end in the same place btw. If they don't, that means you either missed a tap or double tapped a beat somewhere somehow, and you're going to have to find that manually before you go on. This happens more frequently than you think).
17. Next set cell O1 to 0 and O2 to "=O1+4" and copy that formula down the column. This is just a way of putting in the "beat" label as the .dwi demands.
18. Set column P to the equals sign.
19. Set column Q to "=(1/(N2-N1))*60" and drag throughout. This calculates the bpm (one beat over the time in seconds multiplied by 60 seconds per minute).
20. Finally, set column R to all commas. EXCEPT for the last cell which must be a semicolon.
If you've done all that right, you should have something like this:
21. Next highlight all that junk, and copypaste it into the .dwi after you manually add "CHANGEBPM:<and this is when/where you paste>". If all goes well it should look like this:
Congratulations! Save the .dwi, delete the .olds and the .sm, reload songs and course in stepmania, and you should be good to go!
Troubleshooting:
-My first beat bpm looks messed up. What happened?
You have both a bpm change and an initial bpm here. Change your initial bpm to whatever the bpm change is listed as to fix it in the .dwi (aka make BPM: equal what CHANGEBPM:0.000=X equals).
-I suck at tapping. What can I do?
You're boned, sorry.
-What happens when the bpm changes? Or if there's a long pause that I don't feel like tapping too?
BPM changes will be handled easily as long as you change your tapping speed to match. And if you don't tap for a period, you're basically going to either end up with one beat at a really really slow bpm unless you manually change it, which isn't hard.
-Dear god that looks complicated. What's the simpler way?
It takes longer, but the way I used to do it before I had the inspiration for this was just to record four times in a given difficulty, then scroll through the song and record the average time every fourth beat hit (so I'd have changes once a measure -- in the new method the changes are once a beat, which I've toyed with changing but found that only tapping to a downbeat can be tricky). So it's like just entering in column N manually. And then the rest would be as it's shown above.
The bottom line:
It may seem complicated, but all you're doing is recording a tap to each beat of the music (four times to account for variability in your tapping), converting that data into the second of the tap, averaging the taps per beat across each beat, then calculating the bpm based on that average.

My Method (with pictures!)
Ok so, here's how I do it. There are two ways. One is the old and busted, one is the new hotness. I will be demonstrating the new hotness. The only advantage of the old and busted one is that it is somewhat simpler to understand, although this isn't really that complicated either (although it may look like it in places).
You Will Need:
-Stepmania
-Audacity (or whatever you use to get gaps)
-MixMeister BPM analyzer (not necessary but helps)
-Excel or a variant thereof
-Word or a variant thereof (I'm using wordperfect)
-Notepad
-A good sense of rhythm (this is the only thing that will impact the quality of your sync)
-Thirty minutes (it can be done in much less, and it can certainly take longer. Depends on how fast you work and how long the song is)
The Steps:
1. Listen to the song (duh) while tapping along to it to the appropriate beat. Note any bpm changes and practice changing your tap accordingly in those places. Coming in and out of bpm changes are the most likely places you will make errors (at least for me they are) in your tapping.
2. Create the dwi as usual. Use audacity for the gap, and use mixmeister to get a good sense of what the bpm is around (note that mixmeister will like to give you half the bpm a lot of the time). If it's slow (under 100), double it (this will make your tapping more accurate as a 64th note covers less time... don't worry it will all make sense soon). Enter that bpm as your starting bpm.
3. Open up stepmania, go to the song. Select beginner, and select create with blank (same as you would normally do).
4. In the file, begin creating a long ass 64th jack on the right arrow (doesn't have to be right arrow, but whatever). I normally do this by doing a jack for a beat manually, then copying and pasting using ctrl + p and enter -> copy + enter -> paste at current beat and repeating. So it's like doubling. You start with one beat, then there's two, then four, the so on. It is very important that this jack lasts for the entirety of the song. If it goes on longer, you can just Esc -> Play current beat to the end and enter -> clear the extra.
5. Now SAVE. And then exit. Go to, Easy, and select create from source by copy with beginner selected. Do it. Then repeat for medium and hard. This puts the 64th jack in each difficulty you will be recording in and saves you the time of having to do it over again each time.
6. Now go back to beginner. It's now time to record. Set your selector to 64ths. Hit ctrl p. Hit esc. Hit ctrl r. Watch the screen so that you can see where the first arrow hits, then shut your eyes (watching the screen as you do it WILL mess you up) and tap along to the beat of the song throughout it's entirety. when you're done, you should end up with an ugly mess like this:
7. SAVE. Now repeat step 6 for each of the other three difficulties.
8. Now comes the fun part. Minimize (or exit) stepmania, and open up the .dwi for your song. It should have a whole bunch of matrix-y stuff in it. Highlight, for beginner, all of this stuff, except for the opening bracket and the closing bracket (saves a tiny bit of time in the next step). Now you see why the 64th jack was necessary... it ensures that every measure in the .dwi is formatted the same way. If you had just recorded, you'd run the risk of having measures where you didn't hit a 64th, meaning it would be recorded differently in the .dwi, meaning everything later would be thrown off.
9. Here's where word comes in. Open up word, and paste in the stuff from the beginner section of the .dwi (remember, without the first or last bracket). Now highlight from any one closed bracket to the next open bracket (as shown) and hit ctrl f. It should say }[HRt]{, and ask you if you want to replace it with nothing. You do. Hit replace all (you will have to do this twice probably to get all of them since it goes from your cursor to the end of the doc, not from beginning to end). You've now deleted all of the stupid bracket stuff, and most importantly the [Return] in between. IMPORTANT NOTE: typing in [HRt] doesn't work; you actually have to highlight a return and copypaste it in. at least for me.
10. Now this is the cool stuff. Now replace all the 6's with 0[HRt] (zero enter) and all the B's with 1[HRt] (one enter). This effectively creates a single digit column of ones and zeros that excel can handle. The zeros are all those 64th note jacks. The ones are all the left-right doubles that occur when you tap along on the right arrow key during recording (since that 64th has to correspond to one of the big jack). So you've now essentially assigned a boolean value to the notes that you hit and the notes that you didn't.
11. Now hit ctrl a to select all and ctrl c to copy and open up excel. Click the first cell in column B and hit ctrl v to paste. It should just fit in there nice and dandy. And it will probably be in the neighborhood of 9000-10000 cells. This is normal. (note that the next image is pre-pasting):
12. Ok so as you can see my spreadsheet has all kinds of crap in it. The first thing you want to do is set up column A as a counting column, STARTING WITH ZERO. So put zero into the first box, then set the cell below it as "=A1+1" and then just drag that formula all the way down the column to at least where the stuff you've pasted ends. To drag, in case you didn't know, click and hold the bottom right hand corner.
13. Now obviously my spreadsheet up there has all kinds of stuff in it. We'll get to that later (I obviously just use the same template each time as opposed to recreating it for each song). Next you want to repeat steps 8-11, pasting easy, medium, and hard into columns C,D, and E. When you're done you should have something like this (this is prepasting of E):
14. Ok so here's where the ones and zeros come in. Columns F, G, H, and I are all going to calculate at what second each of your taps hit, for beginner, easy, medium, and hard recordings, respectively. So column F will refer to column B, column G to C and so on. This is the formula you want to enter (for cell F1 as an example): "=(A1/16)*(60/BPM)*B1+GAP*B1" (insert whatever bpm and gap you used, and remember to change this between files). Copy this down each column. You can even copy it across columns, but remember to go in and change the first variable to refer to column A (if that doesn't make sense, then you're better off just typing it once per each column).
Now, how does this formula work, you might ask? In case you haven't figured out already, it basically just goes through every 64th note of the file and calculates the second at which it hits. Literally the formula in units is NumberOf64ths X 1 Beat/16 64ths X 1 minute/BPM beats X 60 seconds/minute + GAP in seconds. So all the zeros and ones do is act as true or false values. If you hit a note there, you'll get a second value. If you didn't, you'll get zero. If you do this successfully, you should end up with something like this:
Does it look familiar? It should. It's basically just like what you see in sm if you had recorded all four times in one difficulty on different arrows. Sort of like the steps editor except in matrix mode.
15. Ok, so now we know when each tap hit, but what about all those zeros? How will we ever average them out with all those zeros in the way? Basically, you just highlight all the data in a column (WARNING: if you just select a whole column, you may end up seriously boning your computer if it accidentally grabs through cell 65556 or whatever it is. This happened to me once and now I just highlight manually). Copy this into a blank notepad file, then copy that into word (if you go straight to word it will come out with this weird formatting that messes things up. Now hit ctrl f, and replace all 0[Hrt] with <Nothing>, and that deletes them all! note that it can't delete any of the recorded taps, because excel will never report a decimal that ends in zero unless you ask it to specifically. Now you select all and copy and then paste it in to column J. Repeat this for each difficult for columns J-M.
16. Now the easy stuff. Set column N (eg given is for cell N1) to "=average(J1:M1)" and copy that down til at least where columns J - M end. (Columns J - M should all end in the same place btw. If they don't, that means you either missed a tap or double tapped a beat somewhere somehow, and you're going to have to find that manually before you go on. This happens more frequently than you think).
17. Next set cell O1 to 0 and O2 to "=O1+4" and copy that formula down the column. This is just a way of putting in the "beat" label as the .dwi demands.
18. Set column P to the equals sign.
19. Set column Q to "=(1/(N2-N1))*60" and drag throughout. This calculates the bpm (one beat over the time in seconds multiplied by 60 seconds per minute).
20. Finally, set column R to all commas. EXCEPT for the last cell which must be a semicolon.
If you've done all that right, you should have something like this:
21. Next highlight all that junk, and copypaste it into the .dwi after you manually add "CHANGEBPM:<and this is when/where you paste>". If all goes well it should look like this:
Congratulations! Save the .dwi, delete the .olds and the .sm, reload songs and course in stepmania, and you should be good to go!
Troubleshooting:
-My first beat bpm looks messed up. What happened?
You have both a bpm change and an initial bpm here. Change your initial bpm to whatever the bpm change is listed as to fix it in the .dwi (aka make BPM: equal what CHANGEBPM:0.000=X equals).
-I suck at tapping. What can I do?
You're boned, sorry.
-What happens when the bpm changes? Or if there's a long pause that I don't feel like tapping too?
BPM changes will be handled easily as long as you change your tapping speed to match. And if you don't tap for a period, you're basically going to either end up with one beat at a really really slow bpm unless you manually change it, which isn't hard.
-Dear god that looks complicated. What's the simpler way?
It takes longer, but the way I used to do it before I had the inspiration for this was just to record four times in a given difficulty, then scroll through the song and record the average time every fourth beat hit (so I'd have changes once a measure -- in the new method the changes are once a beat, which I've toyed with changing but found that only tapping to a downbeat can be tricky). So it's like just entering in column N manually. And then the rest would be as it's shown above.
The bottom line:
It may seem complicated, but all you're doing is recording a tap to each beat of the music (four times to account for variability in your tapping), converting that data into the second of the tap, averaging the taps per beat across each beat, then calculating the bpm based on that average.
