One, Earth has been around much longer than billions of years, there was an article on yahoo that confirmed the earths existence to be over trillions of years old. The research has recently just gotten a lead on the actual length of time, though, many believe that Earth's existence will never be determined, but it's well over trillions of years. As for the universe, I can honestly say that will NEVER be determined.
As for the fossil, I believe in Darwins theory of evolution, and this article and breakthrough find is the missing piece that finally combined them.
