Nor does thinking "I'll just be really abrasively and overwhelmingly friendly and cheerful, and offer a handy insightful tip in every single thread ever whether it warrants one or not" which seems to be the second most common way to try and "get" a modship besides begging for one.

It is just as obvious when someone is going overboard to "prove" their worthiness as it is when they come right out and tell you that is their plan. You need to just already -be- the right type of personality on the forum, you can't just decide to fake it for a while...well, except for Spec.
