Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
freedom to make mistakes and feel consequences for themselves
bubble wrapping your child is the worst idea of parenting and will isolate your child. it'll never get the chance to learn from making mistakes and feel the real value of failure, rather than just be told it's wrong and not really know why.

No offense, but teaching the word 'transparent' is far from teaching what 'see through' things are. In order to properly her tell her what transparency is, you'd need to teach her about the properties of light, the physiology of vision, teach the properties of matter and explain on the molecular level why glass is transparent. I don't even know the answers to all that.
My personal experience is one of me disappointing my dad for not understanding or giving a shit about concepts that he thought I should know at ages too young/not enough background for me to grasp things. For instance, I vaguely recall him trying to teach me about matter and melting and freezing points and he was using frozen juices as examples (we always drank frozen oj), and I never got it.
I also remember my mom trying to teach my how to tell time using an analogue clock when I was 4. It was painful and annoying, but at least instances of the like didn't progress until I was 16 like they did with my dad.
If you want to teach your kids, you'd better make sure they have all the background necessary for understanding something, and you'd better be a good teacher.
My siblings and I had chemistry sets and microscopes and books about math and physics as a kid and I didn't care a whit about them. Give me a computer games, fantasy novels and movies and I was happy as a pig in shit.Comment

Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
Cavernio, you don't have to get that detailed/pedantic about it.
It can be explained to a child as simply as "Well, when you look at something, you're able to see it because light is bouncing off it into your eye. Some types of material, like glass, allow light to pass through them more easily, which is why you can see what's on the other side of it."
The cool thing about kids is that eventually they will test your ignorance with the simplest of questions. They ask questions *all the time* and eventually they're going to poke at something you're not 100% about. That's a great opportunity to learn something together and teach your child how to find the answers to things.Last edited by Reincarnate; 03-28-2012, 09:02 AM.Comment

Be direct with regulations, but let them live their own lives.
My father said he's spent the whole time i've been alive looking for the perfect balance between the twoHow to start an argument online:
Step 1) Express an opinion
Step 2) Wait....

None taken. Just allow me to congratulate you on belittling a conversation I had with my daughter when she'd recently turned 3 years old, bravo. No offense, but teaching the word 'transparent' is far from teaching what 'see through' things are. All I was doing was pointing out my support of not feeding children bs/w.e answers & utilising opportunities to educate them about the world around them.Keep in mind that this is but one of a multitude of scenarios where I have used a proper explanation and taken the chance to educate my daughter on something, as opposed to the fast/easy/lazy route of "just because". I'd hate to think of the sheltered perception of her environment she would have if it weren't for these little situations

I beat my kids whenever they talk or try to leave the house, so this way they go through life as a mute hermit.

Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
I would put s/he in some kind of sport at a young age to stay healthy and fit. If they choose to not continue because there's no interest then I'd be fine with that. I would much rather my child be moving about and socializing/enjoying life. Humans are very social and I'd never let that child feel alone.
So I guess I'd probably be a laid back parent, but not too laid back to where they push you around when older.

Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
I'm not belittling the conversation, rather belittling the argument wherein you used your conversation as an example of a 'proper explanation'.
That said, proper explanations would also involve things like not pretending things like santa or the tooth fairy exist. Those are outright lies, but I bet you play along with your daughter.
Do proper explanations also involve telling them about sex when they ask and they're far from puberty?Last edited by Cavernio; 03-28-2012, 12:58 PM.Comment

Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
there's a pretty big gap between frankly explaining yourself and your punitive methods/behavioral guidelines (which i think is where this discussion started sort of?), and telling your kids that santa isn't real. seems like you're reaching to pick a fight or something lmaosquirrel--it's whats for dinner.Comment

Re: How would (do) you raise your children?
She is 5 tomorrow and hasn't lost any teeth. She is aware that santa isn't real, just like movies/cartoons/fairies etc. Interesting that you choose to misconstrue my support of an idea using examples of my experience with raising my daughter solo, with that of someone arguing that their example is the 'textbook' way of doing something.I'm not belittling the conversation, rather belittling the argument wherein you used your conversation as an example of a 'proper explanation'.

My apologies for adding my 2c into a discussion that involves me at a personal level considering the amount of retarded bs posted in this thread from people without children, and the fact that I've been caring for my daughter since birth and solo since she was 4 months old. (up until recently I migh add as my wife moved over from america in december)

The simple answer is, take a huge block of aluminum, roll thinner hundreds of times with massive pressure, then cut it. lol
