May not seem like much at first, and it's definetely not as scary as the games mentioned previously, but worth a play at least: Heart of Darkness.

It's an old 2D sidescrolling platform game (with environment rendered in 3D) in a bit of a cartoony setting. It's somewhat cinematic in the sense that you have to find the correct way to move on in the game, and there are a lot of great animations in it. You will die a lot (in pretty gruesome ways), and you get the sense of being chased a lot as well cause those shadow creatures can be pretty intimidating when they're after you with tens or hundreds of them at the same time.

Ill just wait till he's beaten it.

Firstly:

OH MY GOD **** THE ****ING "STORAGE" LEVEL

After that, I managed to repair the elevator... I rode it and then, after exiting, entered the jail cell and...

Let's just say I almost immediately said "OK **** THIS FOR TONIGHT" and save/quit the game. I don't even know what's down there yet. All I know is that when I hear monster growls while I'm in a dark area with limited visibility, I **** bricks.


This game wouldn't be so scary if the goddamned enemies weren't so freaking ruthless and infrequent... and if they didn't ****ing appear out of nowhere and hide behind doors and corners and shadows and ****. I made the mistake of trying to outrun one of those gaping-mouth zombies when I initially decided I couldn't be ****ed to play secret-agent-avoider-style. The scary shriek-music started playing once I got discovered, and I basically spent 30 seconds running at full speed for dear life as I heard monster growls and fast, lumbering footsteps behind me. Needless to say, I got slaughtered.

I'm amazed that no one mentioned Heart of Darkness before spitfire did, it's an amzing game and actually has the ability to creep you out pretty well (even though it's a snes game)

You guys make me wanna play Amnesia more, I havent even gotten far at all so I guess it's time to sit down to make some progress.

I also found Doom 3 pretty jumpy, mainly because (i think rubix stated) they jump out outta nowhere and pop up in your face. Never finished this game but it's deffinately playable.

Doom 3, to me, became pretty predictable. You could basically just auto-assume that things would jump out everywhere, which killed a lot of the suspense.

Amnesia, for me, was disappointing towards the end.

Spoilers below, highlight to read. The following were the only "scary" moments for me in Amnesia:

-First major scare was the scene where a monster tried to get into the key-room -- up until that point, monsters weren't really AFTER me.

-The water demon was scary, especially when I had to jump into the water to turn a wheelcrank

-The entire Storage level was the scariest part of the game for me -- Frictional Studios blew its load in this level. Seeing a zombie walk into a dark room I was planning to enter = fffffffff. Hearing a pleading woman getting stabbed = fffffffff. Opening a door to find a surprise zombie behind it = ffffffff. The fiery-pedestal chain room = fffffffff. Actually trying to leave the Storage level = fffffffffffff.

-The prison levels were pretty intense. I *knew* there was a zombie walking around but I'd never know where it was until I basically walked into it.

-The sewers weren't very scary on the whole, but there's a part near the end when you begin to pull the exit door open and a zombie almost immediately appears a ways behind you and clocks you if you aren't fast enough.

-The part with the big green staircase. When you walk up, you find yourself looking at a pic of Alexander before you enter his office. On your way out, though, the picture is horribly warped. Pretty eerie.

-There's a torture chamber near the end of the game where a spiked sarcophagus flies open with a shitload of red mist and a loud squeal. It totally caught me off guard and made me shit myself.

He's put the gamma up SO FRIGGEN HIGH that you can be without a lantern and still see.

It's best to play the game in a dark room with decent sound.
