Re: Why would anyone play Halo?

I actually agree with Dunlop Synth.. truthfully after so long of playing Halo 2 its basically a matter of holding weapons and controlling the map...do you actually see any skill coming from any of the top players? like wheres the double kills, triple kills, killtacs? nowhere... im not saying the pros arent good but its ALL about teamwork...do you not agree after watching all the vids from mlgpro...all they talk about is teamwork...same with the ogres since day one...they always just talked about teamwork. Its seriously not hard to get good with any weapon.. the dual weilds are a joke...they rape close range and its hard NOT to hit someone whos right in front of you, br and snipe are a little more tricky but as long as you keep your cool and dont get frustrated you can basically have those "man i raped this game" games, everytime

Of course rumble pit is different by a little bit...you just have to kinda think outside the box and know where everyone is going to be really good at that. its a matter of learning and id also go as far as to say its about 40% luck

btw im probably never gonna come back to this thread so anyone who dissagrees with what i just said you may as well save your breathe cuz i probably wont read it ^^

To tell you the truth, the only reason the ogres were considered good is because they had the beta, and were first to know about BxR, BxB, Double shooting, etc. Now they would be considered decent players--about today's 35 skillwise.

The reason for there success was 1.) Teamwork, and 2.) Staying alive. Their Kill to death ratio averaged out at 20:0, because they were very smart players, and used cooperation. I played with the ogres a few years back, and I can remember Ogre2 going 42 and 0 a game, while his teammates confused the other team with super bouncing. All the players were close to the same skill, but its the cunning that always gets Ogres the win.

No, that's their average for a single game. They're overall ratio is about 55 kills to 1 death (55:1).

If you really played with the Ogres, you would know that Dan "Ogre 1" went 41-0 on Lockout in King of the Hill.

Judging by your post, you have no idea who the Ogres are. The Ogres are definitely not around a 35. They are technically on the second best team in the world, and are arguably the best. Any Pro team that attends MLG could rank up to a high 40, but again, ranking doesn't matter.

Re: Why would anyone play Halo?

I doubt any legitimate player would make it to the high 40's simply for the reason that I've never met a legitimate player in the high 40's.

@Shadow or whoever asked, yes, I crushed a controller, but I bought two new ones. Something really pissed me off that day, then Synth made a big deal about not using the mic with him and that just set me off. I just wanted to play the damn game. Just a custom game of oddball or something to screw around.

@Shadow I don't really know how good you are at all, but sometime in late 2006(on a Gamertag I didn't mention and will not mention), I got free "lessons" from a number of semi-pros and above-average nobodies. So then I figured I could teach my friend and he went from low level(like 1-10) to level 30 when given only a month or two. So I figure I could get to level 36(is that what he said?), to say the very least.

Well, maybe not, I don't know how many modders and stuff there are, because I mainly play custom games with a group of friends who like to play MLG-related 4 on 4's and FFA's all day :/ Again, this is on my other Gamertag. But for the sake of playing with you, I will probably use 'ToshX' simply because I don't want FFR following me around on the other one.

But, as if right now, I had to downgrade to Dialup anyway :/ When I can afford a faster connection again, I'll come back to Halo. I refuse to play on Dialup or DSL.

40 legit isnt that hard to get to if u have the time and if u can deal with the mods and Standby's everyother game.

Re: Why would anyone play Halo?

rofl Q3 or Halo being deep

Any Battlefield game is more "deep" and strategic than the majority of FPSes. Wolfenstein: ET is "deep" and "strategic". In general, FPS games are not "deep" rofl, wtf.

But uh, my thoughts: I don't see how anybody can stand to use controllers. I mean, I'm not the absolute worst person with controllers and I'm not the greatest with the mouse, but I get way more precision control with the mouse than with a controller when it comes to aiming. Movement, yeah, joystick is better (keyboard you get 1-2 speeds and 8 directions, joystick you get a damn near infinite combo of speeds and directions), but in general I'd say aiming is more important in an FPS. If they made a controller where the right stick was replaced with a trackball, I'd be 100x better at console FPS games (I use a trackball instead of a normal mouse, haha, have for years and it's what I'm used to by now). But I don't know of such a thing, and even if it was out there it's not like I'd go get it and carry it around to LAN parties. =\

As for why Halo is popular....I'd say it's because it was the only really decent FPS game around for X-Box for a long time. If Halo had just been released for PC as originally planned, I don't think anybody would've given a ****. With the X-Box, though, it was a must-have game if you got an X-Box, and enough people got XBoxes that it sold a lot and just kinda stuck. I mean, it's not horrible, but it's nothing special to me. Then again, I only really like shooters with a point (like I mentioned above, BF games and Wolfenstein:ET. I don't count CTF or bomb defusal as real objectives -__-).

Anyway, I suck at Halo, PC or XBox, just because you have lots of life. Usually the more hits it takes to kill somebody in a game the worse I am at it, because I am a trigger happy mother ****er but I can't dodge and keep sustained fire for nearly as long as most people. I mean, I never even liked the first Ghost Recon (you die TOO fast in that) but every time I've played with other people I've completely dominated because you die in 1-2 hits always. Friggin shields ruin Halo for me. Only time I've ever been better than anybody is when I've done rocket-only matches with people. Again, fewer hits = I make them count, haha.
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

Of course Halo 2 isn't incredibly hard to get good at, YOU PLAY IT WITH A CONTROLLER. As I said before, the gap between the best controller players and the worst controller players is significantly narrower than the gap between the best keyboard and mouse players and the worst keyboard and mouse controllers.

By the way, Halo being the only decent FPS game? What about Rainbow Six 3? What about RTCW?

Not trying to flame but a question: What is so hard aout manipulating two joysticks with your thumbs for FPS movement? Even the ****ties of players can get better on a controller with practice. With a keyboard and mouse, you HAVE to practice in order to get more accurate.

Manipulating two joysticks well is just as hard as manipulating a keyboard and mouse well. They both take precision movements which require much practice.

To me, you have much more control of your entire hand set on a base and on four fingers also set on an unmoving base than you do over just your thumbs on sensitive analog sticks.

Well for one, not all controllers are very good. I have a PS2. The PS2 joystcisks are assholes that don't respond unless you push them halfway. Thus if you are like 3 pixels away from somebody's head, you have to push the joystick halfway to move your aim at all, and then that's too much movement and you jerk way too far no matter how slight you wanted it to be. X-Box controllers are better, but still, you kinda like precision. Also, I cannot seem to ever get the right balance of turn speed. Either I take 8 hours to turn a 180 or I'm turning so fast I can't aim at anything well at all.

Using my trackball or a mouse it's easy to have a balance of fast and slow. Take your mouse right now and move it just a couple pixels. Hell, try moving it just one pixel at a time. It's easy. Now make your cursor go from one side of the screen to the other. Also easy, for anyone, regardless of the settings. Translate that to an FPS and you have it being way easier to do both fast turns and precision aiming with ease for most people.

Chromer, when I play on the equivalent of 10 sensitivity on the Xbox with a mouse, I am very accurate and very quick. When I play 10 sensitivity on the Xbox with an Xbox controller, I'm a bit faster but not even close to as accurate.
