Re: new category for FFR
Yeah I was thinking that there could be an engine where you're able to choose a certain combo number and the game sends you right to that spot with a few seconds to get ready. In my opinion, this idea wastes a lot of valuable storage space. +1 to the idea, -1 to the execution.
Another solution would be to make an engine that can't record scores with a seeker, so that you can manually choose what parts of the level you would want. This way, you could use the practice engines to play the current in-game levels without having to upload/reupload anything. Saves time used making isolation files, saves space on the server, and saves players the waiting time for a particular file they want.Originally posted by hi19hi19oh boy, it's STIFF, I'll stretch before I sit down at the computer so not I'm not as STIFF next time I step a fileComment

Yeah I thought of this too, but I thought it might be a challenge to implement so I didn't bother mentioning it. I think that's the best way to go.In my opinion, this idea wastes a lot of valuable storage space. +1 to the idea, -1 to the execution.

+1 to Dossar's version of the suggestion (pick the combo to start at).Comment

Re: new category for FFR
The isolation file idea seems to have really taken off, but I don't know about hosting various isolation files on the site itself, since different people have trouble with different things depending on their play style, skill level and skill set.
-1 to this since while there is some general agreement on things people want to practice by themselves (lololol CP megatrill), beyond that you get into subjectivemanias.Originally posted by thesunfanI literally spent 10 minutes in the library looking for the TWG forum on Smogon and couldn't find it what the fuck is this witchcraft IGR

Re: new category for FFR
Now the general idea of a practice mode for new players I can get behind. It's sort of agitating for new players to immediately have their scores recorded from their first game (I know I was fairly upset at that).
I'm reminded of *Winning* where the offset (used in the SM sense of time between level start and arrow start) was such that there was a short message shown before the file started. Perhaps something similar could be done with these files explaining the basic concepts as the level runs.Last edited by igotrhythm; 07-18-2011, 05:30 PM.Originally posted by thesunfanI literally spent 10 minutes in the library looking for the TWG forum on Smogon and couldn't find it what the fuck is this witchcraft IGR

Re: new category for FFR
I don't know about that, but I would gladly start churning out files that were simply pattern specific. It's not like it's that hard or anything. Quite honestly I could compile quite the collection pretty fast. As far as putting them up on the site or linking to another online engine, that would be up to the admins and whatnot. If you guys want to create a list of basic concept files I will gladly make them. And this includes parts of files in-game as well, as long as I can determine the bpm the file was running at for that part (might need some help on that, it'll depend on what it is).
100-300 bpm staircases
100-300 bpm rolls
100-300 bpm running men
etc.
Things like this I can mass produce and somewhat quickly too. I just need to know what to make and I'll do it.
With the addition of a video or text in the background, I suppose they could be longer files containing more patterns, but then you get into the whole thing of "I don't want to play the whole song to do one part." So therefore, it would make more sense to just make files for specific patterns alone, and run them each about 30 seconds or so. More input guys?Last edited by justin_ator; 07-18-2011, 05:38 PM.

Re: new category for FFR
Yeah, they should definitely be short files (a few hundred notes or so probably) and of varying speeds.
It would be nice to have a "random pattern generator" type feature, but I dunno if this is reasonable to do with the current FFR engine. I'm thinking it would generate a random 30-60 second chart of a given bpm, with a given type of pattern (staircase, stream, broken stream, js, broken js, stream with minijacks, whatever) and let you play it. So this way you wouldn't end up getting mental blocks on the practice files.Best AAA: Policy In The Sky [Oni] (81)

Also, going along with my practice mode idea, there should be additional features like this:
After a run, it'd be nice if you can have the option to scroll through the chart and see "ghost" arrows along with the solid arrows. The ghost arrows are where you've hit relative to the actual arrows...basically, you can visually see where your timing is spot on or is off the mark.Comment

Re: new category for FFR
Broken stream? Don't recall hearing that term before.
Do you guys want me to start on a compilation of technical files?
js, stream, minijacks (fun file I can see it already), medium length jacks, staircase, running men, triplets, rolls
That's what I've got so far. What else? Is a burst file even worth making?
And bmah, I really like that idea. I don't know how practical it would be (probably not at all lol) but it could be nice and helpful. If there was some way to recode the SM editor in the manner of ctrl+r.....
EDIT: Also, bpm jumps....what intervals should I make files at?
100, 115, 130, 145, 160, etc?
100, 120, 140, 160, 180, etc?
100, 101, 102....yeah just kidding.Last edited by justin_ator; 07-18-2011, 06:27 PM.

Quite honestly a link to a Practice Engine would probably be sufficient.
