The most important rule is: You cannot use the Record (CTRL + R) feature. To get it right using Record, you would have to be a computer, inputting the notes on beat at all times. But, since you are human, you are not that perfect, and it will never be recorded correctly. To enter the notes, you have to input them manually. This takes a lot of time to learn and do, but it is the only way you can be sure it is right.
Another thing to know about is Offset. All music files, no matter where they are recorded from, have a small space between the start of the soundline and the first beat of the song, where your notes will be. This "Offset" will push all of your notes forward (or perhaps basckward) from where they should be by that distance. You can press F7 and F8 to move the Offset forward or backward (on the right side of the edit view there is a number called "Beat zero offset" that will change)
There are topics on the forums that explain this a

This is in regards to your uploading of "Christmas Eve Sarajevo" By TSO (Trans Siberian Orchestra)
I liked the effort, honestly... You DID try to make it right. But there are a few things to learn about making a good step chart.
FIRST and foremost: Put all of your main notes (the ones that follow the loudest beat) on the LINES. This should mean they are all RED. If you want a tougher chart, add BLUE and possibly PURPLE or YELLOW notes, but always keep the main beat on red.
To do this (and make sure they are also on the right timing) you need to set the right BPM. It MUST BE EXACT or the whole song will be off. To get it right you use a BPM analyzer (can be found with a Google Search) to listen and calculate the BPM. I found your song to have a BPM of 124, which is CLOSE to 120 /2=60. (Remember, it MUST be exact!). You will know when you have the wrong BPM when your arrows seem to line up, but are all different colors.
