Levels of Thought

What is it that differentiates those who strive for metaphor and analytical reasoning to those who continuously stay within the norms of the human paradigm? A lack of desire mayhaps? If this is the case what is it that provokes such a desire? Drugs? Insecurities? Others? If every individual took the time to analyze that in which is unknown to them in a daily routine, do you think they would be better off later in life? Discuss.
