In terms of whether or not I enjoyed the classes, this will vary between schools and between people. Personally for CMU's program I thought the classes were generally okay. I might be able to better answer this question if you give me an idea of what you enjoy in a class.
For the other part, I think you'll find that materials science is a bit of it's own beast with regards to technicality. I would say that it leans a little more on the physics side, but depending on your area of interest in materials you might end up doing a lot of chemistry as well.
If you have any other questions or need clarification, feel free to ask. Again, I didn't go to UVa so it might be different for your case.

Well it really depends on what you want to major in. If you are shooting for a math major like me, I would suggest taking Calc III at a nearby community college to get ahead. Just make sure those credits transfer to the college you want to attend. I've also taken AP Stats and to be honest, I do not regret it at all (probably because I'm a math major). I would take AP Stats if you are aiming to be a science major since stats is important. Calculus is also necessary for science majors as well, especially physics and chemistry. For other majors, just take BC Calc. I hope this helps!
