School Posted on: April 13, 2011, at 08:30:13pm Alright, so school is officially over... what else do I have to do? This Saturday: 25 page paper is due. NOT STARTED Following Saturday: Philosophy of Science exam Following Monday: Metaphysics exam Following Wednesday: Post Modern Philosophy exam my paper for Hannah Arendt is pretty interesting, I have finally pieced everything together and I have decided to talk about the concept of political apathy and how this concept is apparent amidst all of her works, so I focus on the following: Origins of Totalitarianism The Human Condition Eichmann in Jerusalem Life of the mind Her Essay on Education Im focusing on how the concept of the American Dream has necessitated mass society to be conditioned to work constantly. The structures that govern the neo-liberal tradition are heavily invoked within north American culture, and as a result, our lives have been atomized. With specific reference to political apathy, the noble lie of the American dream propenuates mass society to believe that the banality of labour is considered a `necessity` in order to secure the means to sucessfully exist without such constraints (exactly what the American Dream entails - the conditions for the possibility of success and wealth to `live the good life`. I also look at specific references to American culture which maintains this belief, primarily focusing on 9/11 and the constant movement of the internal lie, from using such words as freedom, democracy, liberty which necessitates an enemy in which mass society focuses on. While that is conducted, I believe (not as a direct result of the government being corrupt). Banality refers to the constant repetitious movements that generates the word `boring`which maintains this process. Due to action and speech now atomized, especially within education (you don`t learn, you are taught... and by whom? the government, our age group has been deemed weapons of mass instruction where we are taught a set of skills in order to labour to the best of our ability. These structures necessitates what it means to be a human being, and thus we are conditioned to believe that we just need to work. An example of this is generated through one of her books, and the atomization process is just put into 21st century context to postulate the idea of apathy. However, in the last section I do give justice as to how this idea can be reconciled, because Arendt argues no condition conditions people forever... which is generated through thought and speech which = action. Action entails the plurality of people, and entails the conditions for the possibility of change. Okay, if I keep going I`m going to just write Excuse the terrible following: punctuation spelling grammar lack of ending brackets I needed to get my ideas on paper so I can understand my thoughts. |
