I have a project due Friday Posted on: January 2, 2011, at 10:27:15pm Alright, so here is my project topic for my philosophy of science class: Has technology erased the soul/self/spirit? I'm with another guy and we're both taking different sides of the argument; I have decided to argue that it has. It makes me sad how post modern I am becomming, I am starting to essentially believe that everything has no foundation because it is all based on other things, basically not having any grounding. When we look at technology we see it as a tool, we have no sense of thinking outside of the technological world because we cannot "unplug" from using technology. At that point since we are social actors, we're influenced in what we see/do/interact with. Everything we share or have in common with influence aspects like what you like. SO I ask such a question as, if we take facebook as an example of this, if all aspects of who we are and what we like are the same or really in common with another, what is a self, if that is what we consider what people are (because corporations also influence what we like and what we don't like) and what they like, what is the self? It just shows that people are too common not just at a material level, but also because of phychological reasons. Most decisions aren't even yours, they're based off of neurological impluses and lighting of synapses that make every choice you will ever make. Technology has shown this capability, so what is to say that science will eventually discover that we have no self? Just kind of stuff like that... I've been reading aristotle aquinas and skinner.. some pretty ridiculous stuff. I however, will always think that I am entirely free to choose in the system in which I can choose. Our world is very deterministic, we have no control of how the world works, only by the choices we have we influence the world. Even the decisions I make affect other people's decisions and what their moral decisions may be. I'm done writing for now. |

hmmm..those are some interesting points..maybe though technology hasn't completely erased our souls...maybe just twisted them into something different?? something astray from what they used to be... I don't know how this is coming across but it's 6:13 in the morning and Ive been awake all night and that's my excuse hahah
