First, and most important, DON'T ever try to step a song as it plays (known as Recording, or "CTRL+R"). Your natural tempo will almost always be different than the song's, and most of your arrows will be wrong. Inputting a simfile manually (by putting in the arrows line by line) is tough and takes a while to finish, but it's the only way to get it right.
When inputting, keep your arrows in a pattern, such as 4/4 or 4/2 (all red, or red and blue) for easier songs, and 8/4 (or even 12/4) for hard ones.
Most importantly, you have to know the song's BPM and Offset (people call this the "gap"). Offset is a space between the start of the .MP3 and the first line of the step chart, which all of your arrows are off by.
In Stepmania, press F7/F8 to change the BPM, and F11/F12 to change the Beat 0 Of |
