Songs of the Week (September 15th, 2012)
It’s been a little while since we’ve had a front page post dedicated to our weekly song releases (more than nine weeks, wow!). Now that the tournament has concluded, we can start dedicating the front page to our weekly song releases. For those of you that paid attention to the release last week, we had a somewhat larger release with four regular songs and two veteran songs. This week follows stride with six songs as well.

To open up the release gates, we have super mario bros theme (original nintendo is awesome remix), by songstowearpantsto. The song features the retro feel from the original Super Mario Brothers theme while adding a more modern twist. Changing the chiptune sounds slightly and adding a few different elements like a fast paced rap and a quick drum n’ bass make this a completely different experience compared to your normal slow-paced and relaxed platforming melody. The simfile, stepped by YOSHl, is an Expert level file that features 725 steps in 71 seconds (for those of you that like to analyze: 10.21 notes per second). While the rate might not seem very substantial, it carries some heavier layering with some abrasive patterns that will give even our most seasoned players a bit of a challenge. This song can be found in the Arcade genre.
Next, we have Scars Left By Time, by FFR’s own Bitrayal (don’t know who this is? Do some research!). Scars Left by Time is a chiptune that sounds like a vintage game’s boss battle. The song itself doesn’t carry a very fast pace on its own, but the feel of the song is very dramatic and causes it to feel a bit more frantic. Silvuh brings us a great chart, rated a 62 on our new scale. This chart definitely fits the Very Challenging difficulty range – it has a pretty aggressive structure. For those of you that struggle with repeated taps, get on your knees and pray that you can do well, because this chart is chock full of jacking (sometimes while balancing jumps, too). Good luck! You might need it.
Our third song in this release is MASCARADA. The artist behind MASCARADA, G5 Project, is the same artist behind Freak, an intense instrumental rock piece featuring all sorts of awesome riffs, guitar solos, drum filles and more. MASCARADA, on the other hand, is a much more relaxed and flowing song. If I didn’t know any better, I would have assumed that this was another song by katoh (same artist as spanish, a FFR favorite). SKG_Scintill brings us another well-stepped chart for a G5 Project track. The difficulty of this one is a 46 on the newer scale, and it does have a bit of a challenge, despite being pretty light on the layering. You’ll have to contend with a large amount of 16ths, and a guitar solo that throws a relatively large amount of 24ths into the mix too.
Next, we have In Flux. In Flux is a fantastic piano solo by talented musician Nick Perrin, the same musician responsible for the Animus Interqueo trilogy. Nick Perrin added a subtitle to this song, “5 Note Piano Prelude” — the song features only the notes of C, E, G, G#, and A (with a few very minor exceptions, like chromatic grace notes and F for harmonics). Initially created for a school project for a music class, it has made its way onto our rhythm game courtesy of resident simfile artist/judge MarioNintendo. Rated a 61 on our new scale, it sits in the Very Challenging area. The song is primarily composed using 8th note and 16th note triplets (12ths and 24ths for some of you less musically inclined!), and the chart reflects many of the accents and melodies by utilizing longer trills and large amounts of jumps in succession to give you a really rigid feel when the accents get really heavy; this song will make a fine addition to our Classical genre.
Excessive Sex is the fifth song mentioned in this post — it is a song created by Vospi. Excessive Sex is a moderate pace electro song that features some really smooth synthesized instruments — however, it isn’t all smooth and linear. Vospi mixes things up a bit and adds some great choppiness in the beginning of the song, and also some pretty heavy bass compared to your typical electro-style song. The simfile, stepped by Wayward Vagabond, is a 57 on the new scale which pits in the Challenging area. If this seems hard for your typical Challenging level file, quite a few of your old scale Very Challenging files sit in this area too. The chart is pretty technical and has just about everything in moderation – short bits of jumpstream, heavier layering, some short bursts, a few trills here or there and I’m more than likely leaving things out unintentionally. Try it and see for yourself; it’s located in the Dance 2 genre.
We end the release (sadly) with Bodies in the House Next Door, by The Flashbulb. The last file for a Flashbulb song (Undiscovered Colors) caused an extreme amount of controversy due to how excessively difficult it was (via violent and near impossible to string together bursts), but thankfully, this song is much more tame. This song follows Benn Jordan’s more ambient side, featuring guitar flourishes rather than oversampling of minimal drums. The chart was created by mi40, which makes this their first file in game. Congratulations! This file is rated a 15 on our new scale, which puts it in the Easy difficulty range. Be careful though, this file does present a minor challenge with some short (and colorful) bursts. This song is located in the Misc genre.
A final note: there were two veteran songs last week that were released to the public today. Mostly Dark Universe and Magnum are now playable for non-Veteran players.

For those of you who might have noticed, there is a minor formatting error that displays the veteran songs; it was an oversight on my part because I had to reorder the songs after I wrote the article. I sent Velocity a fixed version, so it should hopefully be resolved.

This has to be the best front page post in the two years of my active life on FFR. Kudos, AJ. Just the fact you mentioned what were the 5 notes in In Flux blew me away. It must have been quite a commitment to write all of that, and I am truly thankful about what you did! I hope we’ll be able to have front page posts of this quality in 2013 as well.
