Default Make darkshark a business logo...contest.

I'm starting a second business, and need a new logo for it.

The name of the company will be DS9 Design, which will be mainly focusing on apparel and vinyl advertisements. Your job is to be creative and design a logo which properly represents the name.

Most of you regulars in this forum know my standards, which are pretty high, this is will be no exception, I want quality work, that will be ready for print. For those of you who don't know, print quality is minimum 300dpi, so nothing below that please. I would prefer this to be done in Illustrator, or some other vector based program, but if you have to use photoshop, then work at at least 400dpi.

I want darker colors, and maybe a crimson hue thrown in the design somewhere, and props if you can throw in some sort of shark design too, but that's not required.

Prize for the winner will be $20 and a 2008/09 FFR Top 1000 Players t-shirt.

I would like to participate. I need to work on my logo skills because that's more "real world" than the other stuff I do.

edit:

simple, easy to print, readable

Well, I don't even own Illustrator. Sorry.
This is just the basic, flatline design. No bells or whistles or anything like that, absolute minimum. Any shadows, effects, whatever you want, I saved the PSD for adjustments.
Actually, there is one effect. The "d" has a stroke of 4px to make it seem even with the "s", because the "s" is a bigger font size, but this font didn't have bold. I probably should have kicked it up a few more pixels, but I figured I'd let you have a look at my first draft before I screw around with it too much.

Here ya go...

The font used is called "Spyroclassic", by the way.
Downloaded it originally for fansubbing crap, but it didn't get put to much use </rambling on>

I'm perfectly capable of creating my own. Sorry for wanting to involve the community geez.

Mak, I like the streamlined look of yours, but I would still like to see the word "design" somewhere.

Rene, I'm not really feeling the font, and things feel out of balance a bit.

Crash, I like the placement of the 9 over the S, but like you said, the font needs consistency.

Keep em' comin

That still doesn't help those who don't know because any size image can be 300dpi or whatever dpi. Also computer screen measurements like inches isn't the same size on the monitor as real inches (well it could be, but almost never is) if they happen to already know how to change the view to be like the print size. It would be better to state a minimum (and maybe a maximum) amount of inches (printed at 300dpi or 400dpi) for the image dimension.

Or I'll give people an idea of the size of the image.
Many monitors dpi is 96, but it can vary. If the dpi is 96, something worked on in 300dpi is about a 3rd of the size that is viewed on the monitor or 400dpi would be about a 4th the size. One can find out the monitor's dpi by right clicking a picture saved on the computer, click properties, then click the summary tab, make sure you're viewing the advanced summary instead of simple, and checking the horizontal and vertical resolution. Most pictures default to the monitor's dpi.

I've done a lot of research about this print resolution stuff before and that's how I know.

Okay, went to fix the font, but the thing is that I upgraded from Photoshop 7.0 to CS4 today, and the old PSD wasn't compatible. Bummer. So I re-did the image, and made a few other minor tweaks that you didn't mention.

Also, the dimensions are apparently 477x477, if you want highres, I can make this thing like 9001x9001 or whatever floats yer boat, lol.

Anyway, here's the updated one:

Do you want something more elaborate or simpler?

If semi-elaborate, I was thinking about putting together something similar to the stuff in The Raw Shark Texts, if you've read that.

Basically, using small text to make a bigger picture, a shark with D for an eye, S for the pectoral fin, 9 as part of the tail, and design as the pelvic fin.

kinda like this, but from the side.

But i'm not exactly sure if that's what you're looking for... it's not exactly the most printable logo.

In any other case, here's something I just threw together.
/
Or, if you're looking for something a big sharper
/

Another possible change would be to link the letters and numbers of DS9 together, rather than overlaying them. Not sure what your preference is.

Sorry for the page stretch = /

Mostly the same reason graphics artists rarely make graphics for their own profiles. They want some other people's involvement and takes on the ideas.

Hmmm everyone has good placement with their work, but I want to see some custom lettering in these, not just a downloaded font, much like Mak's.
1-10 scale judgment so far

Crash, I think having "Designs" going up diagonally inside the 9 would be a nice touch.
Also the d in ds feels out of place, seeing as how the 9 is somewhat hugging the s, and the s goes down just a tiny bit lower than the d, try and mess around with that also I'd say. Possibly have the d touch the s, and have the inner white circle in the d just touch the black outline of the 9 (can't think of how to describe this all that clearly).

Just trying to think of some suggestions, I like that design.

Ok. Here's one more idea.

It's a bit pixelley right now, I'm trying to fix that up.

400 dpi as requested, i can make further adjustments if needed.

edit: it works well also if used on a black background, which most of the others don't.
