I'll be honest I believed it to be white & gold in any way that you see it and wasn't going to have any other way about it myself. Was quite shocked to find it an optical illusion based on contrast & lighting.

What a shitty camera that took this.

Someday in a world without incandescent bulbs this will no longer be a problem.

I was in the same boat as Psychoangel. The first time I saw it it was white and gold, I posted it to Facebook to ask family what they saw, thinking it was just some kind of big internet prank and people were pretending it was black and blue.

I looked again 20 minutes after and it was black and blue and it kept switching between the colors that I was able to see for about an hour. Now I see nothing but black and blue.

Everyone else in my family sees gold and white.

a good way to illustrate the effect of additive and subtractive mixing of colours in photoshop is to simply create a new layer on top of the image, fill it in with a 50% grey, and then changing the blending mode of that new layer to subtract or divide. because grey is the most neutral of all "colours" (well technically it's not a "colour" but a tone), it works exceptionally well when trying to light balance and colour correct any photo.

as shown below, you'll get a good perspective of what both sides see but to more of an extreme when additive/subtractive mixing is at the highest point.

with all honesty though, the original photo is just god awful so there's not really enough information to process colour.

Okay this problem really pisses me off because it's just a trick of perception like it's been mentioned. You can do it yourself photoshop proz, but if you measure the RGB values of the dress going from head to toe, you see it getting more gray and not more blue, due to being more in the shadows. Our perception tells us this is more blue, when really it is more gray, at first instinct. It is more blue at the top, where it appears more white. The same trend happens with the values of gold

In fact most of the scene is IN the shadow but there is very warm, very hard light in the background (it's sunny as hell, why doesn't anyone notice?) so the colour temperature of the photo is off, the whitebalance is not going to render the blue as blue, it is rendering it gray. Neutral gray is easily influenced by changes in surrounding light and if warm light is around, it will appear more blue, and if cool colours are around, it will appear more warm.

But really TL;DR it was too sunny that day to take a good photo. I really disliked this little internet trend because there shouldn't BE any speculation as to what colour it is, it's a question of why is it confusing for some of us, especially for those with no sense of visual context.

It's a good experiment to see how the photo would look a few exposures ahead, or a few exposures below, to illustrate that less light = more dark = lower colour temperature = more blue, and the opposite for a higher exposure.

I'd like to see a source that actually "proves" the dress is white and gold. I've seen lots of convincing arguments that it is in fact black and blue (which it is) but people (not to single you out, Sk8/rushy, but you two being some of them) say they've seen articles or having proof the dress is white and gold. Where...?

Still white and gold in the picture. Whether the dress is actually black and blue is irrelevant to what is in the picture

Yep.

I'm more willing to go along with the "white is actually blue" thing than the "gold is actually black" thing. Given the middle image in the 3 side-by-side images in the OP (which I assume the middle is the original image), Yes, anyone can see that the lighter color is a light blue/off-white color.. but there is absolutely 0 black to be found on that dress, period. Gold? Yes. Brown? Absolutely. Black? Nope sorry.

All samples were taken from the darkest parts of each respective image (on the dress).

That's because your eyes understood the scene differently. The colour of the dress will depend on its environment.

Some people see the dress as white and gold because they think the photo was taken at contre-jour.
If you think the photo is overexposed and not taken at contre-jour, you'll be more likely to see it as blue and black.
The reason why we all disagree is because the photo is utterly shitty and give us barely no context with its environment.

Just remove all the stuff around it and everyone would agree it's a gold and light blue dress :

(my own shitty edit is shitty)

I'm still not understanding, i was sitting at my computer desk and saw it as gold and white, for every pic on my FB newsfeed, then i saw it as "black and blue" later and came home, sat on my comp and they all changed. Even the pics i commented on of friends asking and i saw them as white and gold earlier, so it was literally the same pic. haha
