Average Rank Reset Proposal
I can imagine one of the largest stumbling blocks to Raw Score rankings is the massive amount of data that has to be transferred.
What if we didn't move every single score over? Before you start throwing tomatoes, let me explain. (Bear in mind I have no knowledge of how the backend system actually works, there's a chance this post is completely worthless). What if the old scores database is kept, but not updated anymore. Any new plays go into a new raw scoring database, which becomes the new default for rankings. Then UPON REQUEST, users may have their old scores uploaded into their ranks. This would take the 1 million or so users with scores down to maybe 2,000 tops who would request the score transfer. Effects: This would greatly reduce the amount of data to transfer Songs with 100,000 user scores now would be much less heavily weighed in level ranks Level ranks would show much more of a measure of average skill amoung the remaining community Users would keep all their old scores while converting to raw scoring saves Now tell me how dumb/impossible this is |

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
it seems to me like revamping the engine to accommodate for such a change would dwarf this concern since transferring the data can be automated

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
Didn't we had changed/upgraded servers in late October when Synthlight made his appearance ? (http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...staff_updates/) I suppose that's what happened but don't know what went on behind the scenes.
I'll quote myself : Quote:

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
It's going to be required to clean up the raw score leaderboards in depth first because there's still a lot of unedited hacked scores in those leaderboards...
albiet scores are removed from accounts, accounts are blacklisted, and scores don't show up in combo scoring, the scores are still there in terms of raw scoring because of the way raw scoring excludes combos. Last edited by gold stinger; 02-6-2015 at 04:09 PM.. |

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
The raw scoreboards are full of garbage data, here's my suggestion:
1. Clear raw scoreboards 2. Copy over current combo scoreboards 3. Update when a player gets a better raw score 1+2 are doable with just SQL. 3 might need engine changes, but this needs to be done to support raw scoring in any fashion anyway. |

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
This thread title is seriously misleading and is probably why this isn't getting as much attention as it should. "Average Rank Reset" makes it sound like you want everyone to have to work for their scores again, which is not the case. Something like "Suggestion: Separate Raw Score Database, Transfer By Request Only", though wordier, is more like what you mean.
What this idea actually is, I really like it. But how about this: after the switch is made, what if the site could transfer someone's scores automatically the first time they record a new score? That way, it would stay current without having to deal with manual requests. Level ranks showing one's skill among the remaining community sounds amazing. (The community is never totally static, so what's good now wouldn't be good in another however-many years, but anyway.) Like, it's really evident when you have just a few goods on an old file. Clearing and transferring would also clean up the hacked scores, so that's good. Not exactly sure what it means for unrecorded scores, so hopefully that's not much trouble. I linked to this thread in the staff chat the other day. No one responded, but I didn't push the matter, so, rawrp. I don't really know any details about the switch over to raw scoring other than that it's supposed to happen eventually. |

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
Non-issue, transferring and converting every score on the site (as well as filtering out most hacked/cheated scores) is a process that takes a few hours at most, and we have the space for it now. The real stumbling block is all the development changes required to actually implement new scoring and code and whatnot into the site. So, what lurker said.

Re: Average Rank Reset Proposal
If we only want active players, we can only transfer over the scores when someone refreshes their levelrank_raw.php screen. The "best players" will be erratic as it fills in, but thats ok.
