dx3_dx9.dll information for SM

so, I reinstalled Windows 8.1 on my laptop so I can get back into making music, but also to play stepmania. of course, on a fresh install, I got the dx3_dx9.dll missing error. I googled the error so I could find the end-user runtime installer for DirectX 9...

but it turns out that a shit ton of links on the microsoft website now redirect, unabashedly, to the Windows 10 Upgrade page. obviously this is some straight up bullshit, so I did some more hunting.

hopefully staiain's performance at agdq actually breathes some life into the community, so I'm making this post for the inevitable "dx3_dx9.dll" errors we'll get due to new players.

OpenGL is the default renderer, dx9 is supposed to be the fallback if opengl fails to start for whatever reason.

on this laptop in particular I can't run the game even after downloading directx 9

It shows a different error with no information
