Default Don't it?

Don't it be whack knowing that almost 75% of Americans live on an income less than $30,000 and consider themselves fortunate to still be able to just barely live

Damn, really? I feel even more fortunate now. I made that last year, and made 46k this year. And I'm starting to string by. D:

$30,000 for one person is enough to live comfortably. For a whole family it would be difficult.

23k is the poverty line

a lot of people think that "entry level jobs" or retail should pay lower so that people eventually move up to higher paying jobs.

so if everyone is to chase that dream, who would be left to work 60% of jobs? they are all necessary.

also props to staples in canada being unionized.

With all of the American pride flowing about, I wouldn't be too surprised if the average dipped below the poverty line and the satisfaction rate still remained.

because entry level jobs require minimal skill and ordinary people that hit age 16 can start working those jobs if they want to

minimum wage shouldnt be treated as a career

You perhaps underestimate how many unpaid internships and minimum wage jobs that will only ever give marginal 0.05c an hour raises there are. Employers know they can get away with only offering that amount of money, so more and more people have to choose between minimum wage or no job.

Depends on where you live. In SF/NYC you wouldn't be able to do a whole lot w/ $30k

My family in Canada used to live off 15K/year, and my economics/business teacher told me it was impossible.
I still remember telling her if she wanted to come over to my 2-bedroom appartment that has 4 people living in it one day and see.

I live off 15k a year currently. However it's not comfortable but I have a roommate who takes a portion of the bills. I would love together 30k at the moment because it would greatly improve my living situation.

I do agree that low skill jobs don't deserve 50k salaries, but if we restricted those jobs to 16 year olds there would be a MASSIVE shortage of labor because, in theory, everyone should have eventually moved up to higher paying jobs. or you could just import immigrants right?

RIGHT AMERICA?

at 42k per year alone I can say that even this isn't much in today's economy.

What is a career versus a job and why should it be something every individual needs?

Just to further push that question. It is a good point as not everyone should be working towards the same goal. Not to mention that it wouldn't work in the first place.

Well by that logic paying 40k for 4 years of a university degree must be a heinous offense.
