Time for award winning post JKJK. Anywho I too used to be on the brawl hate train going back and thinking "Man this game is shit shit shit" but then I kind of realized something.
1. Melee is a lot more competetive. Chances are you are turning items off and will have some sort of fit if it isn't a one on one match without stock. The most fun you can have in this game is to treat it as competetively as possible I would think. I know I didn't want to play any other mode and would grind in for tidious hours until I became good and would watch countless montage videos of M2k and Neo and other shit.
2. Brawl isn't bad not in any sense of the word, but treat it like mario party. Its a game where you get a bunch of you and your friends together and you just decide to play for the fuck of it. You can still be good but it is nowhere as competetive and has alot more of the "fun with family and friends" kind of vibe that nintendo really had going for it.

Chances are though for the times Brawl might have had a bit more people playing at the time, but melee was clearly the longer lived game.

edit: Also a bigger reason for your disappointment is the fact that the hype centralized around brawl was ALOT greater than this. I would remember people would talk about the trailer as if it were the next coming of jesus. And then when the game came out it was like (...) with the less hype behind this smash people are bound to be less disappointed.

A friend and I noticed that before Mega Man puts his helmet on, he looks slightly like Isaac or Matthew from Golden Sun.

I have enjoyed Brawl more than Melee but think Melee is better than Brawl
I don't have to think something is better just because I like it more

This SSB looks to have less lag on the end of moves.
