Mother series
I recently played through Earthbound, and honestly I was really surprised that this game was pretty good. I figured it was one of those overrated games that every RPG fanboy raves about (cough cough FF7, Chrono Trigger, etc etc) but it was much better than I thought.
Has anyone else played these games or maybe Mother 1/3? |

Re: Mother series
It's probably my favorite RPG series to just sit down and play through. Good tunes~

Re: Mother series
I bought the game after playing it through emulator. Then I finished it in a couple afternoons. Was worth the price of admission.

Re: Mother series
Earthbound was fantastic imo as well, and I'm on the same boat as popa lol I think this is one of the best RPGs I've ever played for its simplistic approach, odd but extremely addicting battle system, difficulty curve, and the crisp OST along with a unique set of graphics.
It's pricey for a cartridge of it, but it's worth it if you're looking for a really good RPG. Has anyone played Mother 3? I was tempted to try it on an emulator (e-gasp) |

Re: Mother series
Mother 3 is a very good game, it's worth playing at least once. For english speakers emulator is the only real option unless you really want to fumble around on an actual cart. It's worth playing it on emulator with the english patch though c:

Re: Mother series
Mother 3 is great, just not quite as good as Earthbound (though probably only due to nostalgia.) Mother 1 is ridiculously difficult, but the guy who translated it recently added a "for dummies" who just want to play it and not have to grind for a billion years (since it's a nintendo game.)
I am an earthbound fan boy through and through though. |

Re: Mother series
Back when the original Super Smash Bros. came out, I remember asking myself "Who is this Ness kid?" It wasn't until Melee came out that my curiosity finally got the better of me. Earthbound was either easier to find back then, or I just got lucky, because I found a copy at a local pawn shop (along with F-Zero X. I was unfamiliar with the F-Zero series at that time, as well). One of the best video game purchases I ever made.

Re: Mother series
I played through all of the Mother/Earthbound games. The first one was a grind fest for sure, but that's what it basically felt like to me: Grind to win. The battle system was fairly quick so it was not too much of a bother. I'd suggest the "easy" patch if you dislike grinding.
Second game in the series is really great, too. A much better step-up from the first game in nearly every aspect. Combat was still overly simple and those support PSI barely had any use here but I do recommend this game to anyone interested in the series. Third one by far is probably my favorite, I thought this had a lot more to the story in here and I never felt that it bogger'd the gameplay in any way. There's really a lot to say about this game, but to make it short I think they nailed down almost everything right. Of course, all of my playthroughs were through emulators but should I get the chance to buy any, if not all the games at once I don't think there would be much hesitation.

Re: Mother series
imo smrpg + ff + ct > eb
Which isn't to say EB isn't a fantastic game... I just didn't like it as much. Giygas was pretty awesome though |

Re: Mother series
I played through 2 and 3 and really liked them both (liked 3 the most). Should really replay them when I have the time, also have to try out Mother 1.

Re: Mother series
Earthbound and the other Mother games are very unique in that it doesn't give you bullcrud scenarios. You got games like Final Fantasy or pretty much every single Square game trying to be this epic-like fantasy adventure of a life-time full of consquences and drama.
Earthbound doesn't really do that approach. It's a very down to the ground type of game that gives you familiar settings in a pseudo-modern world that has pinches of fantasy thrown in the mix of it and it doesn't try to sell itself to be an epic fantasy adventure so many RPG's tend to try to achieve. And the game executes this approach, almost flawlessly. That's why I like Earthbound. |

Re: Mother series
I'll definitely give Mother 3 a try then. I don't want to cheat the experience, so I think I'll opt into getting reproduction cartridges for one or the other. From reading what you guys think, I'll give Mother 3 a try.

Re: Mother series
Earthbound is always awesome when I first play it. Somehow I can never sit down and play it for more than a few sittings without getting bored of it.

Re: Mother series
I never really got into the series. One of my friends has an Earthbound cartridge and one time I watched him play the game for a couple of hours. I couldn't even understand it; it's so unlike the RPGs that I enjoy.
