I play 1 hand 3 fingers on levels <30 and spread on everything else.
Rolls? Good. Streams? Good. Bursts? Awesome. Staircases? No way in hell. Any advice? Ideally I'd like good examples of slower staircases that I could practice on. What I'm talking about: ![]() It's keeping me from FCing a lot of songs, and the closest I can get right now is keymashing miserably. edit: An example of stairs I can't do is MASCARADA under Dance 2. It's level 46. Everything else is a piece of cake but 'dem stairs.

If you want a really simplified answer...
1) Just use spread, staircases will be nothing. 2) Should you be playing one hand three fingers, use the middle finger to hit the up/downs and the other two for left/right respectively. Although this could be a trouble when it's at a faster speed. 3) Try to emulate it with two of your most strongest/well-coordinated fingers, good luck. I'm just gonna let another better one-hander to have a say in this, though...

I tend to read staircases as "triplets" (212 // 343 // 212 etc.) otherwise I tend to drop boos. This is primarily because the pattern basically consists of 6 notes while they are (usually) 16ths instead of 12ths or 24ths. So I try to think of them as alternating one handed triplets.
That probably won't help at all, though, but this is just my two cents.

When it comes to staircases that occur for longer than seven notes, you'll have an accenting point. 16th notes staircases would be accented on the first note of every six-note sequence, because you would be repeating the same tap over and over again. In the image you showed:
![]() The left arrow repeats every beat and a half. The accent point should always be the first arrow you start at -- if you start on a right arrow, you're going to want to accent the right arrow repeatedly. For MASCARADA, the staircases are relatively easy to hold rhythm on, because the accenting point is every single beat. All you have to do is make sure you keep even intervals in between your steps that aren't accented. This is mostly a rhythmic guide -- doing staircases on one-hand involves a lot of discipline because it is -extremely- tempting to slide. Practice the motion of a staircase at a slower level so that you slide at all; I find it most comfortable to do a 1234321 one-handed using index-middle-index-ring-index-middle-index (etc). |

I use spread and look at it like a slower version of a roll.

Is anyone else not able to do staircases on the keyboard unless they're playing to a chart?
