Default JJ Abrams in talks with Valve to direct Half-Life movie

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-...005857102.html

I am honestly kinda skeptical. I am not convinced that it would translate well to the medium of film.

Well let's see all the movies that were based on Videogames...
Super Mario Bros. - Absolute rubbish
Resident Evil - Fanservice inc.
Silent Hill - Fanservice inc.
Tomb Raider - meh
Wreck-it-Ralph (I do count it as a movie based on videogame solely because it actually contains legit videogame chars, save for a few) - awesome as fuck
That Halo 4 direct to DVD movie - shitty as fuck, you should kil yaself
Tekken - ...
Street Fighter - ...
Mortal Kombat - WHY??? OH GOD WHY?!?!?!?

Overall: Unless he can pull off something like Wreck-it-Ralph, I highly doubt that it would do well (And I'm mentioning the notable games that got the movie treatment, I think there was more but these were the ones on top of my head) or it would get fanservice abuse.

HEY MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIES ARE KICK ASS, WTF THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!

besides that I agree. I mean, I love the resident evil series, but I'm a RE fanboy, so I see that reason.

eh, I guess I'm a stickler for high quality movies -_-. I mean for a videogame to be a movie, that's like finding a diamond inside a huge pile of shit basically. Also, the characters in the mortal kombat movies don't feel alive...at all. If you listen to the english dub of Arc Rise Fantasia (It's a jrpg for the wii. Wonderful game but what really turned me off was the english dub. If you hear it, my god x.x), that's how the characters in Mortal Kombat feels to me. Kinda like reading a script in a monotonous tone...

@ Dragonmega: The movie felt subpar to me :/
@ plopadop: that movie is like a love-hate thing lmfao. I hated it because they just completely ruined what it was suppose to be. But for nostalgia's sake it would always have a place in my heart since they did try to make a film out of it. But other than that, the film doesn't merit it all that well. Though I do say that how they transport from New York to the Mushroom Kingdom is hilarious lmfao.

Oh, it was EXTREMELY subpar. The only reason I found it mildly entertaining was because I was never a fan of/played the game series. Im sure any fan would have hated it.

That's my fear lmfao. I fear that one day there will be a movie based on a videogame that will outdo mario as the worst videogame movie in history lmfao.

My word : don't expect this to be exactly like the games.

The problem filmmakers have with video games movies, is they have to create a new environment from a game that people have spent countless hours on. Most people will try to see the movie and compare to the gaming experience they had with the game... and I believe some people see video game movies as a very long cut scene. that you can't press X to skip

...So they're making a movie on Half-Life, yet are neither making nor showing any signs of making Ep. 3? I think Valve should get its priorities straight...or just learn to count to 3.

Oh no that I completely agree with you. Its just that I feel like the people who are making these are trying way too hard to get the complete atmosphere of the transition from the game to the big screen. They fail to find a common ground that can cater to both the gamers (fans of the games) and the moviegoers. If you lean a bit too much in either side of the scale, its just going to fall apart. That's what made Wreck-it-Ralph such a great movie despite it being based off of videogames. It found the middle ground between the gamers (based on the content of it) and what makes the moviegoers enjoy a fine film. Unfortunately though, most of the videogame movies fall under cliche formats that saps the feel and the atmosphere away from it all. SO while we can't completely transition the entire game into the big screen, it would be nice to have a middle ground for it.

@guest: or maybe the movie is 3 o:

This so much. SO MUCH. I love Valve franchises, but they always feel unfinished with the second game hinting at something next to come. It's sometimes good to see some series of game continue being developed through years, and other times, it's good to be concise and make games that feel solid and complete. Valve is that guy before you in the corner store line that can't quite decide between a Butterfinger or a Crispy Crunch
