It doesn't matter how branchy the maps look. The maps don't represent the routes. Neither of the games let you start in a city of your choice and follow your own path in any direction you wanted toward becoming the champion. You started in the same place and went to the same destinations in the same order every time you started a new game. There are complex areas in both generations that are only shown as dots or squares on the maps you posted. Both games are linear enough to make it clear that a free roaming world is the opposite of what the series was going for on a macro level, although both games did still include interesting routes. What difference does it make if Black is 97 percent linear and Ruby is only 94? If you don't like 5th gen then fine, but it's not for the reason you're saying it is, because that reason isn't real.
