A bit of 5 but mostly 6, ambience is my #1 listen these days. Artists like Tim Hecker are great-- that's prolly a 5? Lower? I'm not sure.
Either way, I'm not at any position to feel any elitism because of the higher level, it just happens to be that most of the qualities i like in music happen to be textural, and abstract. They make my mind playback complicated imagery which blows my mind all the time. Also, why are field recordings in level infinity? Naturespace is fukken amazing. Unless they mean field recordings of urban things, the one album by Biosphere (level 3 tier??) is all field recordings. Pretty biased chart!!

I genuinely enjoy microtonal and non-12tet music. So I guess that's Level ∞ stuff haha Atonal music sometimes strays into the "why are you doing this" territory, but properly executed atonal music can be really cool too. (that thread in Musicians' Jungle Gym got me in a mood to listen to this stuff again, so good...) I wish I had a piano tuned like this: That's one of my favorite 19tet youtube videos... can't believe it's improv One more for good measure

Let me present you Bull of Heaven. They're known to make very long songs : Don't be afraid, this is only part 1 of 200,000. The whole track (210: Like a Wall in Which an Insect Lives and Gnaws) is 9060 hours long, more than a year. And, surprise, it's not their longest. They made 260: lcm(2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19,23,29,31,37,41,43,47,53,59,61,67,71,73,79,83). Supposedly, the duration is 8,468,560,238,751,771,034,868,848 years, 317 days, 21 hours, 6 minutes, 30 seconds. I frequently listen to everything between 1-4, and dabble occasionally trying some stuff from 5. By choice, I would spend most my time between 3 and 4.

So, I tried to answer this as accurately as possible. I only count ones on which I listen to on a DAILY basis (AKA listen to them frequently on my ipod or computer)
Level 1. Jazz (1 point) Level 2. Metal, Dubstep (2 points) Level 3. Extreme Metal, Folk (2 points) Level 4. Industrial, IDM, Ambient (3 points) Level 5. Noise, Experimental (2 points) Level 6. Harsh Noise, Dark Ambient, Drone (3 points) Level 7. Tibetan Throat Singing (I actually love this, lul) (1 point) So based on this chart, I'd be a tie between 4 and 6. I personally see myself more in level 4...but a lot of genres are left out of this chart. XD |
