i never understood why people used megaupload

no offense to any of you but the dl speeds were always obnoxiously slow and to upload anything took forever too. sendspace/mediafire was always better for that imo or private servers like izzy's. did someone have an account to megaupload that uploaded all that or something?

Because it was good enough, basically. A lot of hosting sites were in use back then. It might have also been a factor that they would pay users who had uploaded popular files.

Of course nowadays there are only a few really good ones Mediafire is a personal favorite.
