sorry who_cares, I tought it was for something else.

It wasn't multi-difficulty, there was only one difficulty but there was an .dwi OLD and a .sm OLD, that's proprably why.

the old ones wouldn't have affected it.
probably a blank file in a different difficulty. simple.

If it's not the old ones, then it can't be a blank file because there is nothing else.

the blank file wouldn't create a second .sm file. they would be contained in the same one.

All you have to do Genesis is to look in your editor (Stepmania or DDReam editor) and scroll through the difficulties to see if you have more than one.

For instance, in your Stepmania editor: edit/sync songs --> find your song --> scroll to "difficulty" --> press left/right to scroll through the various difficulties. See if you've accidentally created more than one.
