it's not trolling. It's a legitimate question, considering that both Christianity and Leprechaunism have equal amounts of evidence in their favor (that is to say, none at all). The fact that you're avoiding the question is lol.

you're taking an extremely naive view of the issue. It's not as simple as "back off and respect religion because who's really right in the end?" |

You are the Richard Dawkins of FFR, and that's cool except that RD is an abrasive person and because of that he will never convince anyone on the other side. They just hate/disregard him instead. Which is pretty much what Mans0n is doing. |

My viewpoint is extremely naive when you don't even care to consider the pros to having faith. Right.

That's absolutely wrong lmfao thought you were smarter than that.
There's a very serious problem with telling people that it's OK to blindly justify faith. As an example you've got ~kitty~ in this very thread saying crap like Quote:
So no, it's not over the top to say "I've had enough with the BS and with society telling people that it's OK to push baseless crap on others out of your own ignorance and arrogance." That sort of religious mindset is infinitely more arrogant than anything a strident atheist can put forth. |

The entire foundation of my argument revolves around admitting ignorance. I then use that ignorance as a tool to show that, until remedied, I reject claims for which I can learn nothing about. If anything, your comment applies to you, not me, as you appear to have gleaned vast knowledge of things you have no empirical tangibility of. That's where I see you still don't understand what I'm saying. You wouldn't have made that comment otherwise, and you certainly wouldn't have stated that I don't have evidence the rapture won't happen, which is something I already dealt with explicitly in the core of my argument. It was a very key point, with a link, so I wonder if you have even been reading what I've said. However, I will point out that forcing a stop on an argument doesn't mean it's a stalemate If we're playing chess here, I have to agree to a draw, you can't simply proclaim one. I will, however, agree to respectfully yield and leave things where they are. Quote:
![]() As an ending note, many of you individuals need to lighten up. A lot. Seriously, learn to engage in debate with people on any topic. Religion doesn't need to be a sacred topic that people can't have a discussion about. It also doesn't need to be a topic you intend to sway opinions on. I never intended to sway Manson; I'm simply responding to him. You can call it pointless if you want, but most conversation is. You also don't have the right to not be offended. Maybe Reincarnate is being a dick in your opinion, but learn to deal with it. Engage in debating points that are made, not side issues. The points that he has been making have been dodged repeatedly, regardless of whether or not he is offensive, so many of you are at fault as much as he is.

also a note on Dawkins to MrGiggles:
You do realize that it doesn't matter how "nice" you are -- people like mans0n aren't likely to change their views, right? You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. Once someone has taken that kind of mindset, it's almost a lost cause unless they get the intellectual curiosity on their own merit. I actually more closely follow Neil deGrasse Tyson in his view. Ultimately, the best tool for remedying ignorance is education -- getting people more scientifically literate about the world. The religious stuff tends to naturally filter itself out as a result, which is why we see a correlation between intelligence and the likelihood that one is atheist. Almost everyone invokes God when they're pushed to the limits of their ignorance -- even Newton did so. But God is otherwise a shrinking pocket of ignorance at the mercy of knowledge. Richard Dawkins is indeed an asshole but I don't fault him for being abrasive, because his point isn't about converting people. Dawkins will easily convert any ignorant yet rational person sitting on the fence who takes his arguments seriously -- but you're almost never going to butt your way into a religious mind and force it to accept evidence. That's just not the end goal. The ideal goal is to simply become less ignorant and to support keeping literacy high, church and state separated, and the merit of evidence soaring upwards in its priority of weighting over superstition and fearmongering. |

There are countless Christian charities world wide. When was the last time you volunteered? When was the last time you donated to a charity? When was the last time you did something out of compassion for your community or fellow man?
These are the ideas that most Christians hold. While I do not care to believe in their God or attend their churches, I commend those that do what is good. What good have you done in this thread other than spreading doubt and hatred towards these people? Again, shame on you. |

I've volunteered plenty. You don't need to be religious to be charitable and moral toward common society. Most charity work is not done through Christian establishments, either, so you aren't going to get too far trying to propagate that myth.
And stop trying to twist it into "hatred" -- it's a spreading of scientific literacy and logical, reasoned, rational thinking. And yes, the whole point is to get people to question things more rather than blindly swallowing what holy books tell you. |

Your "logical, reasoned, and rational thinking" sure is unnecessarily demeaning. As for charity, my point is not that Christians do the majority of volunteer work, my point is that the reason Christians do volunteer work is because their faith promotes it. |

And Christians also do various other things because their faith promotes it.
Such as indoctrination of children. ![]() |

Look, my problem is that not ONCE has ANYBODY in this thread tried to acknowledge the good things that religion provides. It would appear that mans0n and ChesterDalton are the only religious people in this thread, and even they have so far failed to acknowledge this.
Failure to look at both sides of a coin is quite ignorant. If you're as eloquent and intelligent as the members of this forum would lead me to believe, Reincarnate, you should very well know that. |

I'm an Eagle Scout. I've done more volunteer work than you can shake a stick at. I am not religious. I'd like to see the statistics on this.

You say you tend to follow NDT's methods and reasoning rather than Dawkins, and NDT is A+ awesomesauce, but look at Aldentron's list of quotes and tell me you honestly don't think you're being too abrasive towards people who honestly believe they're making the world a better place through practicing their beliefs. edit: plus, it's just straight up not nice to refer to someone as retarded, even if they are. This ain't the gBin yet. ps you're retarded ;o Last edited by MrGiggles; 05-27-2011 at 06:52 PM.. |
