Play the original. The rule book is incredibly thin and very easy to understand. Move on from there.

2nd edition FTW! understanding the relationship between THACo and AC isn't hard at all.... noooo.....
and the game isn't unbalanced at all... a party of 4 level 13 guys can't defeat hoards of level 30+ months... noooo.... then again, it takes years to get to level 13 because of the wacked out exp and leveling system.

I remember learning the basics of AD&D over IRC once. It was brutal (I might still have the stats and the derived values I obtained written down somewhere in the basement), but it was worth it to see the reactions of the more experienced players when I rolled Str 18/83 for my half-orc. XD
