nobody fiffers anymore.

This was pretty helpful. I want to learn japanese, and I think this would be good to get me started. I don't see why everyone's arguing and stuff.
By the way, is there any specific rule for pronouncing a single u at the end/middle of a word?

No one is arguing in a bad way. They're just improving each other's grammatical errors and the such. Maybe you should actually read.

well, I got it right away since I can read kana. I figured it was your name since, katakana is used for foreign words and names mostly. I dont really need 100 creds tho.

You extend the 'oh' sound if there's an extra u at the end.

But you'd probably have to get someone else's verification on all of this; I hardly care about Japanese. Quote:

What Mr Carbo said. Also:
The correct pluralization of the word "manga" is "manga". If you want to use an S, just be a nonweeaboo and say "comics" or if you want to be specific, "Japanese comics", although, if you just said "comics" we would have already known you meant Japanese comics.

well, I skimmed through the thread, and I'm not sure if these have been noted already or not, but I'll just post the mistakes that I find in the OP...
Quote:

ohayo -> ohayou さよなら -> さようなら Sayonara -> sayounara (although the う sound is often slurred in this case) Quote:
like, こんにちは(どうですか?) [How is your day?] also, romaji for は is technically ha. eigo - えいご - 英語, not erigo otoko no hito - おとこのひと - 男の人 I would disagree... both males and females use this. More like atashi - あたし you ight want to add ore - おれ - 俺 too. Quote:
shokai -> shoukai - しょうかい - 紹介 Quote:
Quote:
りおしんわおんがんこがだいすきです。-> りょうしんはおんがくがだいすきです。 Quote:
おんいちゃんはチョコレートがだいすきです。-> おにいちゃんはチョコレートがだいすきです。 Quote:
すきげない -> すきじゃない, すきではない nanin -> nannin なにん?-> なんにん? きょのことば -> きょうのことば kyo -> kyou Quote:
予とごの人 -> 男の人 yotoko no ko -> otoko no ko 予とこの子 -> 男の子 there, that's all I could find for now. Also, my birthday is on_______ is probably the most natural if it's: 私の誕生日は__月____日です。 |

I have a question.
Would it be acceptable to say... Watashi wa Iruse desu. When introducing yourself? Or do you have to use 'namae'? Would you only say that in certain situations?

You're saying "I am Iruse" yes.
I only wanted to say "watashi no namae ____ desu" because that is "my name is ____" and I think that sounds a lot better than "I am ____" to introduce yourself. If someone is asking your name you could always just say "____ desu" though. I think all of the above is right. I would wait for confirmation first though.

Yeah, but it's not the most masculine choice for males either.
And on the topic of pronouns referring to the self, particularly 俺-- I've never liked it. Something about it just strikes me as wrong. Could it maybe be that it's an especially informal word? Maybe it's just that the initial o at the beginning reminds me of the honorific o and I try to take the humbleness of avoiding its use when referring to self seriously.

That kanji is "ore", right? (If that's right, it's not that I knew or anything - I looked it up.)
What's the difference between it and watashi? And I didn't realize watashi wasn't very masculine... what other words are there for "I" or "me"?

Watashi is generally used for women referring to themselves. Men can use the term watashi as a symbolism of higher power. Most males however, use ore.

Haha, seriously? That makes me happy. I had a bit of trouble figuring out what koohii and kaaten were, although I'm still a bit 'eh' about my English translation for them. This thread inspired me to start learning... although it's a pretty slow process for me. I just memorized 2 columns of the first hiragana chart (vowels and k-vowels) So that's 10... Although I got the wrong symbol for ko at first, so I was memorizing the wrong one for a while, but oh well.
I've also got some pretty basic rules down, so I'm good. omgitznpv recommended a good website to help me learn, and so far it looks great. It also makes a really good point, imo.

/me is in Japanese 2 this year. Aced Japanese 1 (If you don't, you deserve to die in a fire).
I was hoping to get into AP Japanese next year.. But they're kicking me out because I'm 18 and haven't graduated yet. Fkin school system. Now I have to pay COLLEGE prices to get my high school credits at a Community College. But the good thing is, I only need a few credits, so I can take some regular College courses (going to be some pre-requisites). But yeah. We're learning more and more kanji every day, which is a challenge for a lot of people, but I seem to be breezing by. Stroke order is pretty confusing at times. And learning which of the different ones to use, like getsu/gatsu, hyaku/byaku/pyaku, etc.
