I was thinking the same thing when I read the first post. I know very little, but I saw something about it once. I've had a few times where I was somewhere between asleep and awake (I was just waking up or just falling asleep) and I couldn't move right away. A couple of times that it happened, it happened more than once as I was drifting in and out of sleep. I'd wake up and try to move but all I could do was wiggle my pinky finger. The worst ones were where I was in a position where it was a little hard to breathe but I couldn't move to another position. Luckily it was only about 10 or 20 seconds, but it's still very unpleasant.

Once, when i was really little, like three, I dreamnt of seeing a dog in the park and it started to bark at me. That was all my dream was. Then, throughout my childhood, almost whenever I would dream or have a nightmare, near the end I would hear the dog barking, and all of a sudden, while still in my dream, I knew I was dreaming. And I knew that I had to wake up from me dream, or some sort of beast would take me. So I would dream, hear a dog bark, and then try to wake up from my dream. Somethimes I could wake up, but a few times the beast caught up to me, and it was the scariest thing ever.
To actually know I was stuck in a dream was really scary. I don't know if that's a type of night terror.

They're nightmares.
