A night terror is a nightmare, or an aftereffect of a dream.
For example, I had one 3 weeks ago for the first time in about 9 or 10 years, when I woke up, I could not move, and I could not open my jaw for about a minute. Some people believe that feelings like that are associated with an out of body experiance, but I believe that they are simply the after effect of a dream. Frequent night terrors is a sleep disorder called Pavor Noctunus, or Sleep Terror Disorder. This thread is for discussing what you belive they are, and sharing you're experiances, if you have had one. |

Well, there's a three things about night terrors that define it better than 'nightmare' does, considering nightmares and night terrors are two different things.
1) The subtle point, night terrors are exceedingly worse than nightmares; more frightening dreams and whatnot. 2) Unlike nightmares, when you wake up, everything's a blank; you remember VERY little to no events that went on in a night terror. 3) Night terrors mostly only occur in childhood; once you reach adolescence, night terrors shouldn't occur, and less if something is wrong psychologically. That is all.

When I was really young, I used to get night terrors frequently. A couple of them were so bad, that I went into shock.
Night terrors happen during the third and fourth stages of sleep, meaning the person is in an extremely deep state of sleep, and is thusly hard to awaken. This can be difficult for others because the person having the night terror will somethimes act out what they are doing in the dream, such as screaming in terror. |

Yes, they do happen very frequently in young children, but that does not mean that they cannot happen in older people. |

If they happen about once a week then yes, you have a disorder, if one happens once in a space of 10 years, then no, I don't.
I researched it for about 3 hours. |

Eh, you're most likely right. It was a while ago when I learned about it.
I guess I meant that night terrors happen WAY more frequently in children--yeah, that sounds about right.

Oh, ok, because I seem to remember my mom telling me about times when I was sleepwalking, and woke up screaming and stuff like that when I was bout 5 or 6.
It also happened alot to my younger brother, worse with him, because sometimes he would just get up and walk around and randomely start yelling in the middle of the night. I remember alot of dreams, but no nightmares (exept for one). |

I got one about two months ago or so. I woke up shaking, and I couldn't even move for about 15 minutes.

On a side note -- I have also stopped remembering 95% of my dreams. If I dwell on a detail I remember when I wake up I can remember most of the dream and pick out everything that was out of place, but usually I don't remember any of the dream. When I was little I could almost always remember them. |

I'm surprised no one's mentioned sleep paralysis. That's what some of you seem to be describing. It's the thing neptuneshalo talked about, which is a process your body goes through every night to keep your muscles relaxed while sleeping. The problem arises if you happen to regain consciousness somehow and your body remains paralyzed...
That's only happened to me once that I can remember, but it was really scary. I tried so hard to move my finger and couldn't. It felt like I was expending the amount of effort required to lift a boulder just to move my finger a milimeter.

Not sure if this relates to this topic but i'm still kinda confused on your guys posts.
I woke up once from a nightmare with my fingures bleeding and sharp chest pains, and the nightmare had to do with my hand and getting hit in the chest. Would that count? |

Even while not conscious, your body often picks up on things going on in reality that you're unaware of, so it's not uncommon to have some of those things incorporated into your dream.
For example I've had dreams in which I hear people who are actually talking in reality, but I think they're saying those things in my dream. If you go to bed really hungry or thirsty, or needing to go to the bathroom, you may have a dream involving a search for these things (and never finding them, in my case XD ).

i dont think its really possible to have an "out of body experience" if your mind/soul/whatever....wasnt with you, you couldnt be dreaming...frankly, i dont see how you could even be living, your body is your body...it cant "separate" in any way....thats just my thoughts

The worst night terror I ever had was basically just like Resident Evil 2, except that when I "woke up" and went to the kitchen, Pyramid head was just outside my door and as soon as I left my room he killed me in a horrific manner.
Then I woke up for real and didn't dare move for 10 minutes because the dream was so vivid. I don't think it was that I thought that Pyramid head was still out there, but was just the sense of being absolutley terrified beyond reason that kept me from getting up. Granted this was a few years back.
