Tournaments are meant to be ordered so that players battle each other, with one of the two combatants advancing. look at most professional sports: the US open, Wimbledon, the NFL playoffs, the MLB playoffs, the NCAA tournament, the NBA playoffs, etc. they all have draws with specific opponents and matchups. without matchups, tournaments wouldn't be tournaments so much as they would be survival competitions. Seeds get skill recognition and are distributed evenly as far as possible from other seeds. Unseeded qualifiers who immediately play seeded players have to deal with their tough luck. Free-for-all makes it more fair, but takes away from the tournament atmosphere a lot.
